Hi everyone,

Yesterday, I tried to remove the spare wheel on my 80. I've only had it about a month, so I haven't gotten around to this yet.

I went to stick the jack tool in the hole in the bumper and found a shaft in the way. I noticed that it lined up with a square bolt in the chrome strip in the interior. This was caked with dirt and I didn't see the screw head in the middle. I spun the square bolt and it didn't seem to do anything. Just spun around. I noticed the screw with a torx head and undid it, finding that the square head and a washer cam off.

This bolt seems seized in place and after looking up a part diagram, I'm not sure if I sheared off this square piece or if it is supposed to come off. Either way, I'm not sure how I can get this bolt out and access my spare tyre.

I assume I'm not the first person to run into this, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here has any suggestions for getting this out.

Thanks.

Some photos might help.
Sorry, posted late at night in my time. Photos would've been in the dark.

Here's some photos of the bolt in the chrome strip, the screw, square bit and washer that came off of it and where the bolt is blocking the path to put the jack handle.

Thanks for up loading the photos, As for what you've shown in your photos, I'm sorry to report my truck (1994 USA import made in japan) has nothing like that at all installed on it. It could be some type of aftermarket anti theft device to keep someone from inserting their jack handle to steal your tire. Sorry i couldn't offer you more help.

My 97' LX doesn't have that either. Interesting option though.

I don't believe it's aftermarket. I've seen other mentions of it on forums, usually people asking if they need to keep it. That's how I worked out it was an antitheft device.

I can't get it to turn at all, so it's rusted in there pretty well. I might have to remove the whole wheel carrier assembly to get at it. Hope I don't get a flat tyre in the mean time.

How deep in there is the bolt? can you reach it with a hacksaw blade?

It's not that far in, a hack saw blade would reach it. Though, it might be more of a pain to saw through it than to remove the wheel carrier assembly. I'll have a look at that when I get off work.
You might want to check and see if a saws all might work better for you then a hand powered hacksaw blade, but you'd need to source a thin saws all blade to be able to work in that small opening.

Your right, I'd prefer to use power tools if possible. I'm a bit lazy.

Maybe a jigsaw blade would fit better.

That bolt unscrews. Just put the handle on it and turn counter clockwise and it comes right out. Don't disassemble that square nut. Leave it as is and turn it.
