I'm the new proud owner of the 1967 FJ45 from PA that Gary was selling. In a provided pic I noticed a spare tire carrier in the bed of the truck. Did FJ45's come with carriers or do they mount to the bottom like my troopy? If they did, where does it mount? :hhmm:

I was watching your roadtrip on youtube last night! Nice truck! Do you have many spare parts? I will need a few things to get this truck on the road.

Gary gave me a great deal on my 67. I could not resist.

Danial,
It is well known amongst 45 owners that those 45 tire carriers really get in the way of your ground clearance. I would suggest not using them at all. As a matter of fact, we have a nice recycling place, here in Jackson, and I would be happy to save you the trouble (and embarassement) of trying to use that old thing.

just send er my way.... :)

Smooth

Smooth indeed. Somebody help me out with this one. I've been on mud for over two years now. It seems like 90% of FJ45's are out west. Why is that? Any theories? Were they sold primarily out west?

Here's my laundry list of things I need/want for the truck.... any leads out there?

brake master cylinder
clutch master cylinder
clutch slave cylinder line
headache rack
tires: Interco 34x9.5s or BF Goodrich 33x9.5
points
rotor cap
spark plugs
air filter
fuel filter
bench seat
tie rod ends
steering stabilizer
shocks
exhaust muffler
rear turn signals
rust bullet
oval 4x4 emblem (tailgate)
front TOYOTA emblem
original T stamped hubcaps
lc stamped bezel (more of a wish I had) these were earlier than 67 I think.
3 speed knob
Battery tray

Only 9.5 more months left in the sandbox until I see my 45! :)

brake master cylinder
Change the brake system out to the newer boosted system. Mark Algazy makes an adapter to clear the rib on the firewall or swap firewalls and put in newer firewall. Boosters out of many toyotas fit if your having trouble finding

clutch master cylinder
clutch slave cylinder line
again go new.. My 45 year old clutch master just finally is puking. Putting new style master and slave in it and running new hard and soft line. Easier to find the parts.

headache rack
Proffits makes a repro I think I think there are others out there
tires: Interco 34x9.5s or BF Goodrich 33x9.5
Wait till you do disk brakes and find disk brake hubcap wheels
points
rotor cap
install 78 or newer dist and go electronic or call Mark Algazy and go with his electronic conversion
spark plugs
They're out there, if keeping the old f you need the correct ones they are short I do remember that.
air filter
it is probably the old oil bath air filter no need to find anything but oil if you go original
fuel filter
I have the PN somewhere it's still avail. when your back if you have not found it I'll dig mine out and get the # off it.
bench seat
original? That will be a challenge. After Chef and I finish our trucks we might have a spare. Cant' tell you till we get his 45 back from body shop and it's been there years.
tie rod ends
going power steering? if so upgrade at same time. if not use 40 kit and you'll need to work on steering pivot on front of frame at same time. Power steering options to possibly clear pto if going that direction are FJ60, Minitruck and scout
steering stabilizer
Dime a dozen, I'll mail you one when your home I know I have a spare off an 80 in the garage
shocks
order at same time do stabilizer
exhaust muffler
don't forget your muffler bearings at the same time
rear turn signals
rust bullet
oval 4x4 emblem (tailgate)
front TOYOTA emblem
I can probably find one when your home to assist.
original T stamped hubcaps
Ehsan was making repro's otherwise keep your eyes open.
lc stamped bezel (more of a wish I had) these were earlier than 67 I think.
at one time Earl Warden had these I think (long gone) and John Pardi made them as well. There was also another company online that had them at one time. Ehsan made them at one time as well out of steel.
3 speed knob
you keeping 3 speed or going 4?
Battery tray
should be a 40 tray, someone has one lying round or fab up own.

Not sure what your plans are for this but if it's a driver we'll all probably agree to upgrade the brakes first. Front disks are probably most important as well as dual piston brake system. The stock system is single piston and if you loose one cylinder you loose them all and we don't want anyone injured. Swapping disks to front is as simple as finding a minitruck or 40 or 60 axle and swapping guts over. at same time swap diffs to get fine spline inners. Old ball and claw axles up front can be used to make your 3speed shift knob.
When you get home from the sandbox and start working on this i'm pretty sure this community will help, I know i'll help with what I can considering your doing something for us that I would prefer not to do.

You have someone that can list specifically what you do need? (look at the truck) or is this your preliminary list. and if you had a location to send some of the smaller stuff prior to your arrival in the states we could send stuff so you have a pile o boxes when you get home. One thing I ask is you join the TLCA, it's a great resource and awesome magazine.

Thanks Erik! This is just my list from what I gathered from Gary(previous owner). I added a few other items... I have to be honest, I LOVE original. Original does not necessarily mean better. I'm just one of those guys who thinks it is a crime to mod or even CUT on an original. Maybe a 2.5 lift and larger but skinny tires and call it a day. I love my 1967 FJ40. 3 on tree and drum brakes. Gotta love it!

I have an OEM headache rack. If you're interested PM me

45

I may not be accurate, but I have always thought that many were brought in from Canada and the NW was the natural place to end up???

:)

there were some midwest/east, they just rusted out a long time ago. I bought the 3 45s i had from wisconsin.

Erik,

well... i'm down to 30 days until i'm back on US soil! two long deployments (15.5 and 11 months) with the arrival of my two boys (just turning one and three days from now)... all in a 3 1/2 year window. and to think that they're are guys with 4 and 5 deployments since '03....

i have the debit card out ready to buy some things that will get the 45 drivable when i get back. sor has an 18-30 june 20% off special running... i personally had a bad experience with them (wrong parts, guys getting an attitude with me on the phone, etc.) but i have had the pleasure of talking to Marv though... seems like a great guy and was very helpful. i've used other vendors too; primarily ccot. they seemed fine. i know that they're several out there, namely Mark's Offroad. I'd like to go with ONE if possible.

of course i will need a tune up kit (points, rotor, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter etc.). sor sold me one for my 67 fj40. my fj40 has an electronic fuel pump... starts on the first try 90% of the time even on mornings in the 20's. i will probably go with that for my 45. i could get a Pertronix Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit too. i heard these are great.

i need a brake master cylinder. 67's came with the single reservior setup. my 67 fj40 has the single setup and works fine but i'm getting advise to go with a dual. it this a conversion kit or the later 1970 dual system? what do i buy in addition to make a dual work?
i need the clutch master as well... again, i think that there is an upgrade master/slave conversion? who sells this?
i'm certain that the wheel cylinders themself are shot. my neighbor told me that my fj40 is leaking out completly from one of its wheel cylinders. i'm not really wanting to go to disks, i have some wheel cylinder rebuild kits that came with the 45... is this wasting my time? there is a guy in ga with several lc's for parts. i could get axels with disks from him. the 45 has 74 or 75 newer? drum axels i was told from the PO...?
i was looking at the 45 suspension kit on man-a-fre (delux w/ everything)... beautiful, but do i really need a complete kit with shackles, ubolts, leaf springs ($1500)? OR, can i just check out what i have, clean the springs, shackles, ubolts and just buy the shocks and steering stablizer... another dumb question, if i want a 2.5 inch lift, i can just buy 2.5 shackles and 2-2.5 inch shocks? or is it a little more complex than that?

This should get me started... i know that i need to physically look the truck over before deciding on other fixes or replacements... Thanks in advance!

Daniel

a)
The original mechanic fuel pumps work well. In my opinion it`s not necessary to do an electronic pump.
Same applies for the Ignition, wouldn´t do an electronic ingnition.

b)
Would rebuild the wheel cylinders & wouldn`t do a disk conversion.
It`s not a fault to do a dual brake master cylinder set up for security ( dual circuit brake system... I also think about that but don`t know "which way I go" (there are different ways to do this / one circuit the front brakes one the rear or diagonal circuit)... have to collect more infos about that (maybe I do that in the next winter)

Three more opinions are possible:
a) one circuit affect on the front and rear axel the other only on the front axel.
b) double circuit each circuit affect on the front axle and one rear brake.
c) ... but that is too difficult ;)

wow, that was a lot of info..

Tune up kit.. you can get it all in once spot. Mark or Marv or Kurt or a handful of others.

Brakes.. Here is where I'm not a purist.. Mark's off road has an adapter to put a boosted system from a later truck on yours. If your truck has a 74ish front drum axle then I personally would convert the front to disks. Leave the rear drum for now.. but i'm not a purist, i go for safety and ease of maint first.

Mark's off road also has a 45 bench seat he was selling couple weeks ago i think you were needing one of those?

Lift kit.. Well the 45 is a different beast. OME has a kit.. The front is the same as an FJ40 if that helps. the rears are different. YOu could go cheap and swap in spring pieces from something else like an add a leaf or just bite the bullet and get a kit. Personally i'd start with brakes and other stuff then worry bout lift. But if your changing an axle to disks then do the lift at the same time.
Lift kits for a 45 are out there.. I can't tell you what's best. There are MANY options with different price points.

For starters, you've got a lot of work cut out and need to bite it off in chunks and gather the pieces to the puzzle.
Sadly I have an industrial shelving unit in my garage with all the pieces of the puzzle (fj45) sitting on it waiting for a couple of things to be completed in front of it.

If i was in your shoes, i'd fix the 40 first then general maint, then decide on brakes. We can give you plenty of horror stories on why to convert/upgrade but it will be your decision.

I can honestly say i have a club member that would probably sell you a new 67 master cheap. I pretty much told him i would not assist in an axle rebuild unless he upgraded to a dual circuit system. After a bit of hem and haw he is upgrading.

For starters.. Give Mark Algazy a call, get that seat he has and buy one of his adapters and ask him about why to convert to dual system brakes.
Order your tune up kit from Marv if you wanna take advantage of the sale...

Then get back to the states safely and thank you for your service to the country.
