Southern 100s road trip

You guys from GA and the east coast really do have a long trip.

From where I'm at its still way cheaper, and not as long a trip, to drive both ways.

Thinking I'm going to leave on the 6th in order to avoid the short timeframe. 7th at the latest.

So out there and back, $1050

Airfare from ATL to Montrose (MTJ) on August 8th, one way, is $257 according to google flight search.
Tow form ATL to Montrose or Ouray, estimated $800 (more? less?)
Added together, 1,100 +/- total to Ouray
Trip home, $525
$1,625 to fly out and drive home.

Now it may be possible to save a lil money on the tow if done in tandem or event with three to four rigs at once. Anyone moderately interested in sharing a tow? :D

Southwest has cheap flights out of ATL to Albequerque or Denver. Both are 5 hour drives to Ouray. You could have your trucks shipped there waiting on you. I might be willing to join that shipment.

That's not a bad idea. I can fly Jackson to Denver for under $200.

Montrose to Ouray is 36 miles, an hour drive, $10 in gas

Denver to ouray is 300 miles, five hour drive, $75 in gas

What little money saved flying to a large airport (Denver) vs. making a connection into Montrose, would be spent in gas driving to Ouray...give or take It's a toss up.

Then there's the dilemma of where to pick up the trucks. Is there a terminal to store vehicles until we arrive, somewhere safe? I don't know anyone in Denver I'd trust all our rigs to...or Montrose or Ouray for that matter. Maybe we have them delivered to Ouray and then have someone pick us up in Montrose? :hhmm:
 
You're probably right about going straight to Montrose. I was thinking about saving on the shipping costs really. I know a couple guys from my old jeep board's OT I've been bs'ing with for 10 years who are in Albuquerque who could help.

Looking at the map, ship the trucks on Monday 5th, fly there on Thursday 8th and meet the shipper in the airport parking lot. A tractor trailer would have to be used to pull more than one of these trucks and I don't see why he couldn't meet us there and we'd connect by cell phone. We could time the arrival for that day. Now, if there was a problem with the shipping, we'd be SOL. I've bought and sold a lot of jeeps/trucks etc over the years and never had a problem with shipping, but stuff happens.
 
Plenty of shipping comes through Denver and transfers in Commerce City (about 15 miles East of the airport)


If you guys do plan on flying into Denver, let me know. I'm an air traffic controller at the airport, I can't promise no delays cause that's thunderstorm season for us....but I'll do my best. I can at least pass a message through the pilot. Your best bet is a morning flight that time of year and I'll work on shortcuts!

Plenty of 100 Series owners here who'd be willing to help with rides from the airport to your truck.

Denver to Ouray is best driven 285 to 50 to Owl Creek Pass (very scenic and mild offroad) into Ridgway, then 550 into Ouray.

My flight into Montrose is about $100 more, so pretty solid there. Getting very interested in the shipping idea.

I'd rather go up on the 7th (Wednesday) though, have time to get settled in before the large crew gets there on Friday?

And by the lack of people replying to the thread now, it seems our list has been culled down pretty significantly.

Ok, I admit it: I lost track of this thread / trip.

Still interested, and would be willing to provide accommodations in NW Arkansas if that's convenient for anyone. However, I may have trouble attending myself if it ends up in late july or early August.

That's pushing it for,me. My sister' Wedding and a family vacation will probably win out. Hope you guys have a great trip and get all of the kinks ironed out for the next go round.
 
My 100 is currently in the garage at my House in Little Rock. I was originally thinking of doing the FJ Summit again (did it last year and had a blast). But the dates aren't working out around other must do's. So this trip is sounding interesting. Although I would probably spend more time in Colorado so I may only join a convoy one way or just meet you guys in CO.

I'm subscribing to the thread and look forward to seeing the plans firmed and hope to be able to join.
 
As long as our group size isn't too large, I think we are good for the nights of the 9th, 10th and 11th, possibly the 8th, for primitive campsite that is off the beaten path.

The other nights I'm sure we can find something.

I've got to finish it this weekend; wire up the lights and winch and install the lower shield and roller fairlead. Ran out of time on Sunday and tax season doesn't allow me to work on it when I get home after 9 every night :mad:
