I'm putting my nephew's 77 FJ40 together, tub is back from the paint shop and the rest of the parts are coming this weekend. I don't have a clutch hydraulic hose and can't seem to find a vendor who has one. Tried all the regulars with no luck. This is the hose that goes from the end of the hard line on the passenger side of the firewall to the clutch slave cylinder. Can anyone help? Feel free to email me shmukter@pa.metrocast.net. Eddie: A while back I went through an exhaustive review of other Toyota brake lines trying to find one that was substantially similar to the OEM clutch line and found nothing. The big difference was that I could not find one with an end on it that would lock in the opening in the original bracket on the engine side of the firewall. If you find one that will fit in the original bracket hole and lock in, please let us know, because I think I spent about $69 for an OEM Toyota clutch line about 2 years ago, whereas the brake lines were available everywhere.

By the way, if anyone is doing this job, and the securing clip flies off into the bushes (as mine did), the correct clip to get is the one shown on the right: Part #96990-10060. The clips on the left are for the brake hoses, and have a different part number.

Note that there is a slight size difference. The one for the clutch hose (on the right) is a little smaller.

Some tips on removing the clutch hose. Refer to pics below.
  1. First remove the clip that secures the hose to the metal holder on the car.
  2. In the original setup, there is also a C-clip below below the holder that needs to be removed.
  3. To disconnect the hose from the hard line, you need to hold the hex part of the hose with a wrench, while turning the hex nut on the hard line.
  4. However, as you can see from the photo, it's incredibly difficult to get hold of the hex part of the soft hose because the metal holder is in the way...
  5. Therefore, you may want to remove the bolt on the firewall that holds up the hard line, so that you can drop the entire assembly by half an inch. That should give you enough clearance to get a wrench on the soft line.
I know the above may be obvious to some of the gear heads here. Someone may also have a better method.

When the new hose goes on, it does not require a C-clip from below (which is a blessing!)
