Solid Axle Summit #9 is winding down today and some friends have convinced me that I need to bring my 60 next year, so I'm putting out a thread if anyone else wants to make the trip as well.
This is a pretty big commitment so I'm starting a thread now so if anyone is interested they have time to plan.

What it is- Solid Axle Summit is an annual gathering of any Toyota 4x4 equipped with a solid front axle. This is the only formal requirement to bring a truck. There lots of vintage rigs, but there is also a little bit of everything.

Where is it- Ouray, Colorado. In the heart of the San Juan mountain range. The event takes over the Ouray KOA campground for the week.

This event is a very laid back gathering of Toyota enthusiasts from all over the country. A friend of mine who has attended the past 4 events has called it "Landcruiser Summer Camp". I got to attend for one day only in 2024 and it was still an amazing experience. You get to spend a week with other Toyota enthusiasts in the San Juans and wheel some of the best trails in the country; Black Bear Pass, Engineer's Pass, Imogene Pass, Alpine Loop, etc... There is no set schedule or group, just meet some new friends that are going down a trail you want to run and follow them.
These trails are serious, so if you want to go make sure your truck is well sorted and your brakes are solid.

Let me know if anyone has questions or would like to attend.

I have attended this event the past 3 years. I can tell you, I am not sure that I have been to another event like this. Like you said, it is like summer camp. I have had a blast and still have not covered all the trails and I am not sure how long that would take to do. I have done about all that you mentioned above. It is cool to be at the top of Imogene (13,200 ft) and drop down and see the town of Telluride below, same for Black Bear pass. Have lunch, then head over another to the next town. Lots of knowledge and varieties of cruisers, and most drive from all over the country to be there. This would be fun in anything from a 40 to an 80. Small town charm is great in Ouray, not a single traffic light for miles.

Year 10 was not on my radar, but neither was 9, and I ended up back out there. 10 will be a special year and each year has had some special guest.

The KOA, is very nice, clean, nice bath house with showers, extra plus. Great base camp and the staff is great too. The SAS attendies have made a great reputation and now they block off the whole campground for us to get first choice of spots. Who else does that?

This is a adult, family and kid friendly event so you can bring the family. Is it a hike to get there? Yes, Is it worth it? YES, plus the temps have been from the high 30's to 50's at night and 60-70's during the day. Do not forget to bring your jacket.

interested despite my cough cough ifs
Last time I was there I rode in my friend's ifs 3rd gen 4runner... we might be able to sneak you in...

I've wheeled that area of CO many times, first trip was back in 1985 with a few friends from Illinois in an 87 turbo 4Runner and a Toyota pickup; it's where I got my start in offroading. Besides Ouray which is a great town with a very good KOA there is also Silverton as another great place to headquarter. Weather is great in September-my favorite time of the year in CO- and if you're lucky the aspens will be extremely comfortable. Many, many, roads, almost all are connected with mining in one way or another. Interesting places to eat and drink and trails not generally difficult but can be downright scary.
Another less publicized area of the state to wheel is Gunnison County. Not quite as many trails as in the Ouray/Telluride/Silverton area but a few days worth of wheeling to be sure. Pearl Pass, Taylor Pass, Italian, they're all noteworthy, doable, scenic, and enjoyable. Add in a lot of places to stay in hotels or camp in the Gunnison/Almont/Crested Butte area and it's a great place to visit.
I hope to get back out there again some day.....................

I agree, the area is simply spectacular, there are not many bad trails in Colorado no matter where you go. Unfortunately I missed the day tickets went on sale and they sold out in 24 hours so this year will not be the year I get back. I was busy working on the house and by the time I found out tickets were on sale they were gone.
We may have to plan a group trip (separate from SAS) in the future so @surfishjoe doesn't feel left out with his IFS. The trails are open all summer so we can go whenever we want.
