Smog Air pump rebuild

Since I posted this morning I tried to get my pump out of my truck. I spent a few hours just getting the spring clamps and hoses off. I can tell you right now those friggin clamps will be replaced with regular old screw type clamps.

I still don't know how the hell I'm going to get the pump out of there after I get the bolts out. It looks like the pump was installed before the engine was put in the truck. I'm going to pull the inner fender off tomorrow and see if it will come out that way.

At this point re-building the pump is a far away dream for me.:frown:

I have the headlight washer bottle out and the radiator over flow bottles out and it was easy. I also de-greased mine and pressure washed it from the top and bottom.

Thanks, I'll look at that in the morning.

did you remove the ps pump?

I pulled the air intake and radiator overflow bottle then I could just squeeze it by the PS lines.
I have it on the bench torn apart now and have most of the bearings on order. My wipers and carbons are in pretty good shape.

One bearing, the NSK DB-36227, is hard to find. The NSK distributor I talked to told me it had an OEM designation in his data base. This means it is not available to the general public. The bearing supply place I went to couldn't cross it based on measurements so no joy there. I'm just crossing my fingers and re-using the old one. I should be okay since this is the bearing opposite the pulley so it shouldn't see much stress.

I'm taking lots of pictures and plan to do a full write up with instructions, pictures, part numbers, and sources.

I just tore my smog pump apart , and judging from the other pictures posted on here , I am certainly missing the carbon shoes AND the middle piece that holds them on. I should have read this post first , because I bought a cardone pump last week. I would like to clean the bearings on the pulley side , so does the "brass part in the middle somehow twist off. Is the smog pump any good with out the carbon shoes ????? Should I just pack it with C-4

That's no longer a smog pump, it's just a belt tensioner for the water pump...

Ok sorry to bring up an old thread but don't think I need to start my own.
Got my pump out tonight and was a lot easier than I thought, just got the pulley off then unbolted and slide it backwards and down past the powersteering box.

[STRIKE]Anyways, how the hell do you separate the two pieces? I can't seem to get mine apart? Did you guys just wedge a flat blade screw driver in-between or did you drill out the two metal plugs?[/STRIKE]

Nevermind I went out and was able to get a small flathead screwdriver in a crease and then just start working my way around and I got it completely off. Two broken carbon fins in there and a TON of carbon everywhere.

However it will have to wait until tomorrow to be gutted and cleaned and then reassembled.:bounce::banana:
