I just acquired a 1995 80-series from my brother-in-law in Arizona (a bit of additional background information is in this suspension thread I posted earlier).

My BIL had the windshield replaced within the last 3 years due to the gasket leaking when it would rain. I took the car to the DIY carwash this morning, and the gasket leaked slightly on the top edge of the windshield, about 4 inches from the passenger side top corner.

I read the FSM windshield replacement instructions in this thread; specifically, these instructions:
  • Lift the lip of the weatherstrip (with hand) land and fill adhesive into the clearance. Adhesive: Sikaflex 265HV of equivalent
  • Apply auto glass sealer dry, remove the masking tape. HINT: the auto glass sealer will harden in about 15 hours.
  • Clean off the sealer oozing out from the masking tape with a clear rag saturated in in cleaner.
  • INSPECT FOR LEAKS AND REPAIR
  • Do a leak test.
  • Seal any leaks with auto glass sealer. Part No. 08833-00030 or equivalent.
Based on these instructions, it seems like the likely solution to the problem is to simply "repair" a failed leak test, by "sealing any leaks with auto glass sealer" as specified in the FSM. The windshield and the gasket both appear to be in good condition. Do I just need to get a tube of Sikaflex and apply it under the windshield gasket? I'm hoping the windshield won't need to be pulled to fix this.

Thanks!
Tim

You sure it’s not your sunroof drains?

Yes, you can spot–fill a bad seal.

You'll have a hard time finding the SikaFlex that's correct for the windshield seal. Use this instead:

Make sure you liberally tape off everything you do not want that stuff on–getting it off requires a Cat–in–the–Hat...

Welcome to the 80 fold.
And a desert find at that 😎

If you know it’s the windshield then there is the patch from the outside route or do as specified option

Improper install is a very common occurrence with the 80 series. As shown, proper way is to glue the gasket to the body and glue it to the glass. Definitely worth printing out and discussing with you installer if you pull the glass. If they argue find another spot.
Gasket is under $100

If patching here is another great resource commonly used with success

Yup. When I hit the upper edge of the windshield with the high-pressure sprayer ad the car wash, a few drops ran down the interior of the windshield.

I suspect it is a tiny leak and will only leak under that circumstance, but I'd like to make sure it is properly sealed.

Excellent, thank you!
