Quick question... Is the exhaust system 100% factory ?

Is there ANY indication that the muffler has been replaced ?

Did that service help? How much is `excessive?' You'll always get some quantity of metail wear.

Good point Sin. My buddy has a large OD SS exhaust system on his 350ci Suburban and it has absolutely no power. Having driven this same type of vehicle before it is incredible how the lack of proper backpressure has robbed his engine of significant amounts of torque and horsepower...

I am dealing with this same issue on my 100, ever since I installed a Flowmaster my pulling power and acceleration are WAY off ( from stock ) The only benefit was a bit more low-end... thats it

Now you got me wondering about the same issue with mine. I also have a Flowmaster with a smaller (than stock) glass style resonator in the rear (after bashing the stock res in...). The bottom end is excellent but mid and upper RPM range is lacking...I attributed this to the heavier loads (all the heavy accessories I added...just like you); more wind drag from front bumper, larger & wider tires; higher stance, etc. Although it IS better with the 4.88/35" stock gearing set-up now...better leave well enough alone or the freak'n SPEND MONEY LIGHT will come on again

My LC is a slug too. My 4runner with the V6 defineatly had more pep.
Thats why I'm going back to a 4runner.

I would have no way of telling since I am pretty new to this whole world. Maybe I'll swing by the mechanic and ask them. What would I look for?

A Toyota mechanic will be able to tell if it is factory exhaust or not...or maybe an exhaust guy too. If it is stainless steel...that would be clue #1 that it's not factory; if the muffler has a name on it (such as Flowmaster, etc) that would be clue #2.

Ok So here is the update

I disconnected the battery, added redline fuel system cleaner, got the 60K service performed, changed the fuel filter, cleaned the mass air flow meter and the throttle body.

The beast is performing a little better, but climbling up to the Einsenhower tunnel from Silverthorne I was flooring it and not getting above 43MPH. It's almost like the engine locks and won't downshift or try and get more power. This was again with OD off and ECT on.

From what I can tell it looks like the exhaust is stock

Engine Timing? Specs say 5-15 degrees BTDC

Engine Compression? Should be between 142-192psi. Difference between each cylinder should be 14 psi or less

Clogged injectors?

Loveland pass East is a killer, but that 2UZ-FE should do better than that, something's definetely up. Is it fast off the line? On a straight away, can you floor it and bring it to redline before the tranny shifts? And no check engine light/code eh? Just throwing out another possibility but maybe fuel pressure regulator?

My LC did better than that with 90 octane gas in it going up I-70. I was close to the speed limit, not fully loaded, and not fully floorboarded. I believe it had about 50K miles on it at the time.

I am surprised the tranny didn't downshift from 3rd. Did you try manually shifting to 2nd gear to see if it picked up speed then? If that works, maybe the transmission needs attention (fluid, adjustment).

my cruiser has the 4.5 6 cyland the auto is a bit slow to kick back when going up steep hills unless i bury my foot on the gas.
i just knock it back manually .

That might what yours is doing

I drove my 99 over the rocky mtn pulling a uhaul in the same area and it would downshift to 2nd when it needed to pick up speed. sounds like the ECM isn't talking between the engine and transmission and it is not downshifting

Something is very wrong then. Did you explain this to the mechanic?

If you are seeing shavings in your diff, that is probably bad. After a drive is the diff really hot? If you are putting big hp into it, it will get very, very hot. That could explain the problem.

Is it shifting down into second? When I take my 99 cruiser over Donner (8kft) I will sometimes drop down to second by flooring it, but for the most part it is 3rd gear and 80mph. No power worries on this beast.

Can you tell if it is a shifting problem or an engine power problem? On the flat highway, will it pull cleanly up to speed with ease?

Hoser had some good things to check, timing and compression. You might also want to add in engine vacuum to see if your exhaust is plugged somehow.
