Over the past holidays my son, who has never expressed much interest in cars, modifications or hotrodding in general, decided he wanted to do a car project. Although I know the overall long term reliability would take a hit we decided on a supercharger install. You get to learn about pretty much everything doing one of these. It's probably the last big project he and I take on before he leaves for college next year so I decided the reliability vs. time with my kid was well worth the tradeoff.
After reading most all of the huge Tundra forum Supercharger thread I went with a Magnuson because it offers both a tune and upgraded injectors. I have some experience with fuel injection tuning from when I converted the 2FE stroker in my FJ-62 from the flapper door AFM to a programmable MAF. So a tune and injectors was a must for me. Also OTT supports the Magnuson which was an added bonus.
I wanted to make this a really positive experience, so we took our time (very busy with Junior year of high school, SATs, and a high AP workload). There was the required amount of cursing but overall we figured everything out. I'd give the kit an A- simply because I didn't like some of the hose routing and a few other component placements (added some additional hose and wiring wrap, etc.). However, overall it went very smoothly, with the biggest hassles being disconnecting and reconnecting all of the constant tension hose clamps and getting the fuel tank out.
So far it has started, run and been up to temp to bleed the cooling system. Idles great, revs smoothly to 3000rpm parked, cooling never went above half way despite the 95 degree heat and bleeding process. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to drive it for a couple of days. But after a few shake out drives I'm going to have a local performance shop do a basic A/F evaluation (hopefully beyond what OBD Fusion reports via A/F and short/long term trims). There isn't a dyno in town. I want a basic validation before driving it a few hours to do a more comprehensive evaluation.
I'll update as I get through the shake out process.
