Just arrived. Still waiting on a few more components for a cooling system refresh.

Figured I’d check on the condition of my cold start fuel injector today, partly because I was curious and partly because I thought it would be easy.

I followed the FSM and removed the injector. It was pretty nasty but not quite as gunked up as some others I’ve seen on Mud. So I used some carb cleaner and elbow grease.

Then I replaced gaskets and reinstalled it. That’s when I hit a snag. I’m pretty sure I cross-threaded one of the bolts that secures the cold start fuel injector to the aluminum air intake chamber…despite the fact that I was tightening it initially by hand and telling myself “Don’t cross thread it, don’t cross thread it.”

Afterward, the truck started very quickly but idled like a spastic demonic creature. Guess the battery was unhooked long enough for the EFI/ECU computer to forget everything. At least I hope that’s what’s causing the rough idle…

I had to swap a water pump about 6 months after the doing it and it just made the process that much easier.
Nice progress on the 62 by the way.

Huge shout-out to @ToyotaMatt who is busting his hump ON THANKSGIVING DAY to fulfill a ton of orders. He went above and beyond and called me to square away some parts and get them ready for shipping.

Consider hitting him up (VintageTeqParts.com Home Page – VintageTEqParts.com - https://vintageteqparts.com/) if you need some tough-to-find OEM parts or carefully crafted OEM equivalents. He’s also semi-regional (Annapolis) vs other vendors across the country or overseas.

Sooooo
While at the "spa". The fuel system is getting replaced. Fuel pump, sender, filter. The cooling system is getting some love too. Radiator, water pump, hoses, tstat, and other small parts.

Looking pretty crusty, Rob! Thanks for making things happen and posting the pics. The old girl is gonna be happy with the new cooling system and trans cooler, fuel system refresh, new negative battery cable, oil change, etc….

I spent a little time on it today...
Almost time to go back together!

More cleaning today and parts started going back on. Waiting for one more sensor then new radiator should be in... as the title says, slow and steady!

Appreciate the update, Rob. I feel like all of this was badly needed after 31 years, particularly replacing the majority of the failing cooling system and old fuel system components.

That being said, the real cherry on top will be deleting that massive aftermarket temp gauge that hogs up half of my dash.
🍒

I don’t have a close-up pic of it, but it’s like a damn cyclops eye.

Not much to see on this one but brought a friend in for a sleep over...

Who would have thought that I had to replace the fuel dampner on two FJ62's in the same day!?!?

My 22mm crows foot would not work and the wrench was too long. I stopped by HD on the way home and then made this little thing. Should work just fine. No need to cut up a Snap On tool.

Double 62 FPD replacement on the same day?!

I knew I never stood a chance of replacing it without the right wench.

Almost like nothing happened.

Knocked out a couple of projects over the last few days but didn’t take any before/after pics.

I replaced the corroded battery hold down, rear view mirror, and fuel filler neck gasket with OEM parts. I also replaced a bunch of headlight-related parts.

Here are some of the parts/numbers:

Despite only having 145,000+ miles, my LC is starting to give conflicting indications that it’s having a head gasket issue:

-White smoke at startup that disappears after a minute or two; one instance of a large plume of white smoke.
-Overheating issue according to my dash gauge (I know, they suck) that pegs it pretty high right after startup and even with minimal driving. Fan clutch works, new rad, water pump, t-stat, gauges, etc. An IR temp gun shows normal temps at the rad and T-stat housing.
-Difficulty starting truck despite good battery and new/strong battery cables/connections.
-I pulled a spark plug and it appears that coolant may be getting in there.

Rob ran a block test on Wednesday that was negative/inconclusive. No bubbles and little or no color change. Next steps will be checking all spark plugs and running a compression test. I sure as hell hope it’s not a HG problem and is something else…

There’s always something needing attention with these old rigs. I just noticed some sort of leak/seepage from a VCV hose above the charcoal canister.

Guess it’s time to learn what a VCV is and how it operates.
