Simple question about mileage..

Just for grins I tried a tank of 87 octane gas. And the same mixed freeway/city driving routes netted me about 1+more mpg (to 15.8mpg). I am going to do several tanks back and forth between the high/low octane to verify...weird!

Traveling at 80 MPH on the interstate, 16.3 MPG is very consistent. This is burning 91 octane or better. A few months back, I was forced to follow a business associate for 250 miles that only drove 55-60 MPH on the interstate. My mileage jumped to around 18 MPG. If gas prices keep climbing, perhaps Toyota will offer an electronic control module that allows four cylinders to be shut-off at the flick of a switch.

At 50-55mph constant velocity on flat ground, this is the best any vehicle can get. Wind resistance is at a minimum, and you're in your biggest gear. In my lifted 86 runner w/ 5spd manual, 22re, ARB/Kaymar bumpers & sliders, I still get 24.5mpg during the summer, corrected (23.5mpg in the offseason). But once the speeds hit 70mph, economy drops to 23mpg, then to 21mpg at 75mph. You could probably make a graph, plotting the fuel economy vs. speed. I also get about 1.5mpg better than my wife (lighter foot).

The 4.7L V8 is pretty efficient considering the displacement. My old 22re has about half the displacement at 2.4L, so theoretically, it would burn half the fuel, but I'm not even close to getting twice as good fuel economy than a 100. I guess most of it is due to an old engine design devoid of fancy electronics.

I sorta recall a thread earlier about the potential consequences about switching octane from tank to tank. Something about the computer or something having to adjust for varying octane levels. I think it was posted by DMX84.

A good price right now for Premium (91 octane) in Reno is $2.39 per gallon!
