Hey guys,

I've got a '91 Pickup DLX 4x4 that I'm in the middle of tearing down for a mild resto. I'm going to repaint it, so I've got a question about the rub strips on the side of the truck, that run along the body line. How are these likely attached? Are they glued or clipped in? Just wondering if I'll have to patch some holes if I remove them.

For clarity's sake, see the picture attached.

I can't find that part in the parts database, and a Google image search shows none others with that stripe attached, so it must be an aftermarket thing. Probably just stuck on with moulding tape. Maybe hit it with a hair dryer and see if they pull off? Run a piece of dental floss under to see if you hit a fastener?

They are double sided tape. Use a plastic chisel, should come right off. 3M makes some good double sided automotive tape if you plan on reusing it.

Get good 3M brand VHB tabe (very high bond) make sure to clean both surfaces really good with acetone.

Good information guys! Thanks a ton. I personally prefer the look of the truck without them, so I'll more than likely not put them back. They're not in the greatest condition all around anyway.

I agree with keeping them off! Post some pics when it's all painted and done.

Will do!

Not much to show right now. This is the truck when I brought it home middle of last year (and then parked it waiting for me to have time to work on it.) You married guys know how it is. You want to restore a truck. She wants a bathroom remodel. Guess which came first? lol.

And here it is now that I've begun teardown. (you can tell it's sat for a few months. Bathroom looks great though. lol. )

It still has the plastic timing chain guides and the stock headgasket. I also have to change the clutch and what sounds like an input shaft bearing on the transmission. Also, the power steering seems to have been leaking since Operation Desert Storm so there's a thick coat of grime over the entire engine and engine bay on the driver's side. So to take care of all of that, the drivetrain is coming out this weekend, the trans is going to my cousin for a rebuild, the engine is going on my stand for a power wash, new timing set, headgasket, and seals, and the body (including the engine bay) is going to be prepped for paint. :D So far in my teardown, I've only found two places where there's any rust. A small bubble on the top corner of the bed, and the battery tray. Other than that, the rest of the truck is completely rust free.

I'll make a build thread when I've got some good progress. Been taking lots of pictures.
