What's Up Mud?

The passenger side mirror on my 2013 has gone rogue. Whenever I start the truck the mirror spins all the way forward and I manually have to pull it back into place. I've tried 'resetting' it, but can't get it to work. I've done some looking around and it appears to be a bad actuator/motor assembly.

The two common options are to either replace the whole unit (~$900), or buy a replacement actuator unit and do a rebuild. Neither of these seem particularly good. The rebuild looks like a huge PITA and $900 is a lot of money for a mirror, even though it does some fancy stuff.

So- my question today is has anyone had luck with aftermarket assemblies? Any specific recommendations? I use OEM Toyota parts as a general rule, but could be convinced otherwise for a non-critical part like this.

Thanks!
Jay

Oof sorry to hear. I had my driver side go wonky. I looked at replacing the actuator but that got dicey. Ended up just replacing the whole mirror. (Hella expensive) And killing my battery lol (cuz I think I left the ignition on rolling the window down)

Not ideal but might be worth trying to find one at a junkyard? $900 is a lot and you might just get lucky to find one that matches and works. I’m sure it’ll be like finding a needle in a haystack but at least wanted to mention it!

FWIW it appears the same actuator was used on the GX460 so that should increase your odds of finding one at a junk yard.. yeah you’d still have to do surgery but at least it might be more affordable.

I tried opening up my mirror last year. I ended up mangling the thing....basically I broke a bunch of tabs while trying to pry the thing open. I had the FSM pulled up while doing it, too. The tabs were part of the mirror housing, which is not sold separately from the $900 mirror assembly. I ended up buying a whole new mirror.

A new mirror is very expensive, but fortunately it's super simple to remove the door card, unbolt the old mirror, and pop on the new mirror. So it's convenient....just very pricey.

While I haven't done it on my LC, I've done it a couple times on with Hondas and this tracks with complete mirror replacement for those too.

Total redneck fix, but highly effective. Figured out which wires control the folding and cut 'em. No more folding out...or in, or any direction for that matter, but everything else works!
