Should I buy a road bike?

if you want to keep your free bike, do yourself a favor and get two locks for it of different types. A u-lock and a cable lock. theives will likely pass yours by for one that's easier to get. Also, fill all the allen bolt heads with wax once you have the seat height etc set. this prevents them from unscrewing your parts

What about a short piece of chain and a master lock. That would probably work.

Yeah. I sometimes chuckled at the hardcore bicyclers on campus during my years at UA.

Of course, I am past giving a s*** what people think of me. After all, I will be one of the "old guys" on campus now.

Exactly.

Don't make your old guy status worse than it already is by road biking it. Of course, you could tell the girls that you are the old guy on campus because you had to stay home and work for a few years to help take of your younger siblings because both of your parents passed away. Pity pussy is still pussy. But, make sure you are long gone if they find out the truth.

Who steals a bike? Honestly...

I know bike theft is a problem. There are some s***ty people out there.

I really don't know who steals them. But, it was a HUGE problem when I went to school. Nice mtn bikes, I can kinda understand, but even s***ty ones got stolen. Where do they all end up? Is there a big underground or black market for stolen bikes? Or do tweakers steal them for scrap value?

They told me at orientation like 5 years ago that most are stolen for quick transportation across campus and then are ditched. That's most likely not the case with the ones where the front wheel is left chained to the rack. Unless they are lots of folks like the black guy that rode a huffy down University avenue with no front tire before every home game.

I'm not buying that. They told y'all that at orientation to make your parents feel that the campus really had no crime, but they still wanted to warn you about losing your bike.

If they were all ditched on the other side of campus, there would be lots of recoveries - which there rarely are.

We have a river running through campus. Every fall, yo can sport bikes tossed in there almost daily.

A guy I know wants to give me a diamondback and it has a big comfy seat, so that route is free.

Beware of guys giving free bikes...

Go cheap, single speed is fine...a mile, shoot, you could jog it.

[strike]I imagine that the local demographics are a little different in Boise vs. Tuscaloosa.[/strike]

I guess I was wrong about bike thefts on college campuses.

I would go with a hybrid commuter. I ride a roadie to school but thats just because it is 3 miles of hills and I like to wake up late for class.

Flat ground and one mile, get a hybrid or a an 07 single speed from a shop for cheap. Both options work. Just don't start wearing tight pants, vintage tshirts and shoes, and riding a fixy with a card in the spokes. That doesn't work when you own a house and a vehicle...

I looked into it a bit more and it seems that I need a hybrid bike.

I just rode a trek that is like $420 new and oh my god. It's a bit different than your run of the mill walmart special.

Edit: This one. Trek Bikes | Bikes | Bike Path | 7.2 FX

Dude, it's a mile...
Have you walked a mile lately. Should be able to bike a mile in 5min. on any bike. Get a $50 Used BMX...

Unless you are just looking for an excuse for a new cool toy, which I totally understand.
