I will be riding back and forth to school for the next 4ish years. Probably less than a mile one way. I've never ridden anything other than the cheapo walmart bikes with mountain bike tires or whatever. Should I buy one? I don't want to spend a fortune. Like $400 or less. So I guess used? Would it be worth it for me to get one. I'm no cycler and probably won't ever use it for anything other than transportation.

where did you decide to go?

less than a mile and no other riding I'd go with a cheapo bike. Bike theives thrive on some campuses.

No. Take a lesson from the Vietnamese, Chinese, Indians, and all those people from places in the world where people ride bikes for transportation.

Buy an urban commuter bike. It can be a used beater. It's like a mountain bike but with racks and no shock on the front fork. You sit up straight in a more comfortable commuter position. (That position is harder on the ass than the road position, so get a comfy seat) Air the tires up really hard for low rolling resistance. You should be able to do this in your price range.

A guy I know wants to give me a diamondback and it has a big comfy seat, so that route is free.

I second the really cheap route...bike theives, neglience on bike upkeep, rain, etc. just wear on the bike...might as well get a beater and put a sticker on it that says "this bike is a bomb" for fun times.

I'll chime in...

No. You will look like a douchebag riding a road bike around on a college campus.

Yeah. I sometimes chuckled at the hardcore bicyclers on campus during my years at UA.

Of course, I am past giving a s*** what people think of me. After all, I will be one of the "old guys" on campus now.

I rode a Schwinn Collegiate back and forth to school during undergrad. 3 spd, fenders, upright position. Perfect townie/school bike. I also rode it up until a couple months ago back and forth to work 2.5 miles.

Now that I'm 12 miles away, I ride the road bike.

Slap some 1.5" tires with a center ridge on the Diamond Back and add Slime in the tubes.

Stinky rides a bike everyday.

You NEED this bike...

if you want to keep your free bike, do yourself a favor and get two locks for it of different types. A u-lock and a cable lock. theives will likely pass yours by for one that's easier to get. Also, fill all the allen bolt heads with wax once you have the seat height etc set. this prevents them from unscrewing your parts

What is the Slime for?

slime is a innertube sealer for small punctures

<nod>

Very effective for small punctures. I've pulled 20+ goatheads out of the tires on the Collegiate. Spun the tires slowly a few revs, went into work. At the end of the day the tires were holding air.

Should be ~$5 per tube.
