shifter pulled out of my 5speed this morning

Hi ok this mornin went to take my runner for drive little history first it was a auto now its a 5speed. Anyway got to botton of driveway went to put it in first shifter pulled the hell out and it s in second or third gear. Is there a clip or retaining ring or somthing to prevent this from happening I was in a rush so havent had chance to pull the plate to see whats goin on threw my flor yet any help b great

Depending on your tranny, it's either a locking collar that you lock in with 1/4 turn, or the shifter is held to the top retainer with 4 screws. It could be that the pins are snapped off inside the collar (seen this happen), or the collar somehow turned and released, or the screws stripped out of the retainer. Pull the center console up, then the rubber boot, take a look.

Thanks for the reply its a top loader and the 4 retaining bolts that hold the shifter in place had all came out. The rubber boot that goes over it kept the bolts from disapearing fixed it and driving it. I thought I had posted it yesterday but phone screwed up
