I need help from the experts :D.

I'm looking at doing some kind of repair to my rear body mounts. There is not much of the original metal in those areas so I could use some pics of what some of you have done.

I'm not looking to get it back into original condition.I just want the body to be connected to the frame back there. It has likely been many years since any such connection has existed so any and all ideas are welcome.

Thanks

rear body mount

Im not close to expert, but heres what I did.I had some 3/16 plate that I cut to the inside profile.weld to the inside panels and the rear cross member.I have not finished welding the edge, but it seems to work well, and its better than nothing

I keep coming back to having to section the rear quarters off, drill out the spot welds and pull up the rear cargo area floor pan, and cut out all the rust. Then build back the bits that were cut out with bulk sheet cut to fit. Coat it all. Then replace the floor pan, remove the rust from the quarters and weld them back on. Its the only way I see to not have to revisit this area again in my able bodied lifetime:meh:. Course, it all depends on how much rust is in there.....my 73 is pretty bad.

here's what I did with my restoration, mine was not too bad and I was able to figure out basically how it should be, the end result is not the prettiest but I think it will be strong. I basically rebuild them piece by piece and built in some bracing so the body mount area would not collapse.

keep in mind pics were taken with the body on an in air rotisserie I built, pm me if I can help at all, have a ton of pics, my project is mothballed for now due to no money to complete it, some day....

Thanks for the comments and pics.

I was leaning towards going the same route as you Sawtooth but was looking for options.A full reconstruction is not in the cards right now Lambcrusher but I agree that it's the way to go at some point.I recall seeing where someone had cut out the rear sill completely and put in some square tubing(say 1 1/2" by 5" or so)
then rebuilt everything around it.I may end up going that way because the more I poke at it the bigger the job becomes .

I've followed your thread Guppie - nice work. You had some decent mounts to begin with for sure.Looking forward to seeing the finished project sometime.

Any other ideas are welcome .

I did cut my whole rear sill out and replaced it with 2x5 retanglular tubing with a 5/16" wall thickness. Used 3 inch "C" channel for the body mounts and sheet metaled the rest. Can't tell by looking at it except I no longer have a hole for the spare tire winch, but I removed that years ago when a 37" tire would not fit down there.

Do you have any pictures of the repairs.Sounds good.

I'm dropping mine of in about 10 days to have the same thing done. I'll have the guy take pics

I think Sawtooth and Guppie probably have you covered

body mount repair. Simple, heavy strap-steel bent and welded to fix the issues. The strapping welds to the cross-ribs rather than the corner sheet metal.

Rides super quiet now and should hold solid through most anything I throw at it. Should they ever get bent they'll be very easy to fix.

My frame mounts were basically perfect. The body side of the mount were essentially gone

I love this idea, its soo simple. It eliminates the hassles of fabricating a fancy body mount out of thinner gauge sheet metal.

Jsaltlick, how did you get the bends in your steel? Vice/hammer, or did you have access to a high end brake? Perhaps a frond driver side/ passenger side body mount could be made out of this material. Since its made out of thick steel, it could take the beating :)

I apologize for the very long delay but here are the pictures that I promised. That is 2x4 rectangular tubing with a 5/16" wall thickness. The 3" c-channel goes trough and is welded on both sides. That is where the body mounts to. The outside is welded to the body panel just under the tailgate opening. I would show the outside but it is covered in bedliner, so you cant see anything. I hope that helps. I also apologize for the mud. I will clean it ... someday.
