Brand new here and glad to be a member. Had a '69 FJ40 in the 90s and LOVED it. Parted with it to get a more civilized 4Runner...then another one which I drive now. I am in the market to purchase a LandCruiser. Seeking advice from those more in-the-know about what year of the 100 production they would recommend to be a good balance of off-road capabilities and on-road amenities. Thinking about something between 2000 and 2003. We (family of 5) do some remote site camping but don't do really rough off-roading stuff and I don't have plans to do lots of modifications...but open to the vast expertise that lives on this site. Your thoughts and advice are welcomed...

Get the '03: It is the first year with the 5speed auto.

I got the '03 since it was the first year w/ the 5spd tranny and last year with the ATF dipstick. The Type T-IV ATF needs to be changed more often than the WS type, but you can use different brands of T-IV (like Mobil, Amsoil, etc.) while w/ the WS, you are stuck using Toyota's. I wouldn't fret over this, as 90k mi between changes is a long time. If I were running WS, I still wouldn't run it that long...maybe 60K.
