After driving my 1997 80 to the Rubicon trail and back, and wheeling for a few days, 50+ hours of driving, the right side of my torso has been sore for several weeks. One trip to the chiropractor and its better but not 100%. The culprit was I was slouched over to the right side using the center console as an arm rest. I'm tall 6'4".

I purchased two inexpensive arm rests on Amazon, I chose this one as it had a more comfortable pad on top. There are 30+ different variations of the same listing. Seeing how I only purchased two, I don't know if there is a better one available.

Amazon Arm Rest Link. ~$36.00

Installation goes something like this. Using a Phillips screwdriver I removed the two screws on the bottom of the panel to see what my mounting options were. If your going to follow my lead, you will not need to remove this panel. Side note, the mounting points are a mirrored image of the diver side, so you could also mount an arm rest on the passenger seat as well.

*Remove lumbar support dial, spring clip is visible if you increase the lumbar support.
*Feel through the seat for the bolt directly above the lumbar knob.
*I heated up a 1/2" dia punch and burned a hole into the seat exposing the M8 fastener. You could use a socket or a razor blade.
*Cut/grind off the two nuts that were welded to the back side of the arm rest.
*Drill a hole large enough for a M8 fastener to pass through. This hole need to be directly between the two holes on the arm rest, in the same plane, do not deviate from the attached picture.
*Installed the bottom bolt through the arm rest using an M8x1.25x20mm long button head bolt.
*Position the back side of the arm rest bracket so it is parallel to the back seat panel. Note, if you deviate from these directions you may miss the steel tab and the top bolt will not have any material to thread into.
*Using the hole you drilled into the arm rest as a guide, drill and tap a M8x1.25 hole.
*Install the top M8x1.25x20mm long button head bolt.
*Reinstall lumbar support knob. You can install the C clip on the knob, then push the knob over the splines.
*Cruise around town with your body not hunched over.

Total cost ~$38.00,
Time ~ 30 minutes per side.
Strength, I can place over 100 pounds on it, its solid.

Once installed there is a bunch of adjustment as shown in the photos by adjusting the ugly orange knob.

Enjoy

Is there already an M8 bolt in there, or just the threaded hole? Do you why it's there? Possibly an armrest in another market?
The M8 bolt is there on all front seats I believe. It is for the lumbar support mounting bracket. The passenger side also had the bolt, however that side does not have a lumbar adjustment. If in doubt push through the side of the seat and feel around for it.

@Dirt Church Ind Finally a slick solution! I've been using a foam yoga block for like 3 years now....

Do you know if the arm rest comes off that bracket? I'd like to install the bracket under the upholstery if possible, and then slide the armrest back on the post. And have it reupholstered to match my interior....

reklunk5,

Yes, you can remove the armrest from the metal stud by removing a set screw from the back side of the pad. If/when you do the mod I would like to see your results.

Just installed this armrest using your instructions. Solid 10 out of 10 and a great mod. I have been trying to find a proper armrest for the 80 for a long time. I used to rely on cheap Amazon options that just slotted in place and were always loose and unstable.

It definitely took me longer than 30 minutes, probably a little over an hour. The process was straightforward, but drilling into the seat was a bit intimidating. The instructions were clear, and the final result is excellent.

Thanks for putting this together. It is a huge contribution to the community.

I'm glad you found it useful. I daily drive my 80 and the addition of the arm rest is the best modification I have done considering the very low price point.

I really like this setup, but am trying to figure out a clean way of installing with the bracket under the leather for a more stock look. I have junk drivers seat and am going to experiment with that one before cutting into my pristine OEM leather :)

Its definitely possible and shouldnt be too difficult. Its been awhile since I had the seat fully apart but I believe popping off the back cover should expose everything you need to reach.

I have 1994 manual cloth seats in my 96 and the manual seat frame is different than newer electric seats. I opted to mount the armrest bracket under the upholstery and it required welding. I painted the lower portion to match my oak interior and got some cordura to make covers that nearly match the marathon seat covers.

There is not enough room to mount one of these on the passenger seat because it interferes with the console lid opening.

Update: the armrest worked on the passenger side after I installed the center console lid from an early 80 series. There is still some interference depending on how far back the seat is adjusted but it is accessible.
