I'm getting a crazy screeching noise in my 1971 FJ-40. Only does while driving. Transmission fluid issue? If so, how do you check the fluid?

I sometimes have that same issue when my wife is riding with me, but that probably doesn't help with your issue....

Try putting your transfer case in neutral and shifting through the gears to see if it's still doing it. If it does then likely transmission issue, if not then start looking at the U joints, output shafts and rear end. Sounds more like a pinion or transfer case output bearing to me given the squealing, but could be a retainer bearing in the transmission.
