Scepter gas cans have the same thickness dimension as Blitz. Which is stated at 7". Mine are 7" when they are empty. I fill them to 5 gals then squeeze them between my knees as I put the caps on,still leaving plenty room for expansion. And expand they do, they go to 9" thick at the "bulge". My blitz can does not swell..(nor leak for that matter like it seems most do)

so the question is...Do new Scepter cans swell too or is it just my really beat up used surplus cans that do the swelling? Hell they look like basket balls..(well sorta)

starting a multi day trip from reno to dallas, I will let you know

new ones swell... but I don't think they swell that much... mine are in can holders and can't expand more to much but I do get sepage if I fill the can above the full line. I also have to open the can before I can get it out of the holder in hot weather. Hope this helps

Yes good to know. Mine don't seep, I even dropped them both off the tailgate last night. Landed hard, upside down, not a leak at all. But they are fat.

The local Surplus shop has NATO cans for $12.50 I think I'll pick up a couple of those...Bet they stay skinny

Back from the trip, Yes the Plastic Cans DO SWELL, however they also can take the abuse of indention I went from 11,000 feet downt to 2,000 feet. they were totaly indented and the cap was VERY hard to turn so I could put some fuel in them. I didnt need any tools just two hands and a few choice words.

I used mine for the first time this past weekend. Didn't need the extra fuel but I wanted to test em out.

They do swell...but they never leaked for me. But when they were swollen up, if I opened the top to let off pressure they would leak a bit.

FWIW, I went from ~5,000 feet & ~ 95 degrees to probably ~10,000 and maybe ~50 degrees at night when camping.

I also used the Scepter nozzle to fill up the Cruiser's gas tank...again just testing stuff out. It worked great...except right at the very end of the pour. Basically when the can is more or less empty the vents on the nozzle seemed to leak a bit of gas. Nothing major.

Anyway...I liked em, and had no issues!

Yep...my Scepter's expand. Definitely makes getting the cans out of their holders a little harder ...but no leaks either!

Crack the seal let off a little pressure that helps, when the cans are a little tight in the can rack ! Dusty 66

That's a good tip...thanks!

I've heard from a friend that when they swell in his Hanna rear bumper he can't get em out of the holder!

For this and other reasons I'm using the Super Siphon...my basket is close to the fuel door. I don't have to lift the cans out of the holder, the siphon is cheap and works well for a simple product.

As Slowag stated I use the super syphon because my 3 can holder on my 4X4 Labs rear is next to my gas tank. I actually used mine when I drove through the desert from Reno to LV. It was 2100 and I was getting really low on fuel and I was hoping that over every rise we crested there would be a GS.
No such luck. I pulled off and down a sandy shoulder swung out the the arm and used the Super Syphon to emptied 2X 20L cans in 5 min or less.

I love the cans and the syphon. I didn't notice if they swelled or not.

Im going to make me a bigger basket instead...but that's cause I want to carry more fuel (3 cans instead of 2) and I dont want to deal with them getting stuck in the basket.... I really like this cans..

HD, I have NATO metal cans. And swell they do. Also to the point where I can't get it out easily from the can rack. Lost your bet!

Maybe not quite a couple of inches extra though.

Recently back from a week-long expedition across the northern Colorado mountains; carried three new Scepters on the roof rack. They bulged very slightly when full at altitude (+/- 10,000') but did not leak and in fact performed flawlessly the whole trip including another week's worth of road driving. They were strapped to a Gobi roof rack and I rarely took them off - filled and siphoned from them up there. 6' super siphon barely long enough to reach my gas tank though. I was extremely pleased with the Scepters and wish now I had bought more when I bought these last December from Dave's Tactical in Canada, as he can't ship them to the U.S. of A. any more.

Hey the scepter cans are the bomb, I bought a bunch (9) on ebay while deployed, plus (6) water cans from the ih8mud hookup. Yes with heat things swell. But my 4x4 labs bumper will never have a problem getting my cans out. Luke made my jerry can rack 1" larger to fit my vintage coleman cooler. Yes kinda anal but it looks sweet back there. I bought Canadian cans so no one in the Army will accuse me of stealing them. They are a little different. They yellow tab is a big givaway.
They are tough I have seen them blown up and dragged down the road. Tough stuff.
I did get 2 powder coated black jerry cans with stainless nozzels. Yes I was bored over there , but they look good.
