Hi guys,

I don't know if anyone has brought this up here before, but there is a place outside of Eudora, Kansas where you can sandblast and paint your projects. I was Googling to find blasters for my project when I found this place. He has a website at http://www.sprayboothrental.com

I went out there today and met the guy who runs the place. His name is Jimmy and he's very helpful. They have several options for blasting: a small blast cabinet (about 36" by 24" by 24"?) a bigger cabinet (about 5 feet wide) and a walk-in/drive in bay.

I started off in the smaller cabinet and spent about an hour blasting small parts. There was a small fan on top of the cabinet blowing in my face, which helped a little with the heat while I worked. The compressor was huge and had no trouble keeping up. The gun would occasionally get clogged, but if I rocked the cabinet a few times, it usually started blasting again very quickly. Complaints: the glass viewing window was pretty shot and needs to be replaced. The vacuum that pulls the dust out while you're working got clogged when I was about 2/3 of the way done stopped helping because the filter was full. Overall, it was very easy to use with a footswitch and I stayed very clean while working. I would wear a thin pair of gloves next time, just to make it easier to get my hands in and out of the blast gloves. After you've been working for a while, your sweaty hands don't want to go in and out easily.
I still had a few parts that wouldn't fit in the blast cabinet and a friend of mine was blasting in the booth, so I took them over there. The blast booth is big enough to drive a car into and has a garage door on one end for that purpose. We blasted some old steel chairs of his and then my radiator stand, a PTO driveshaft and the shifter column.
I thought the price I paid was reasonable. The equipment worked fairly well. From what I hear, even the best blasting equipment will clog periodically and I experienced that pretty frequently.
Obviously, it wouldn't take a lot of hours of booth rental to pay for your own blasting equipment. For people like me who don't have the space or the desire to deal with the mess, this is a nice alternative. I am debating taking my rolling chassis out there to blast it myself. Based on what I've seen, I probably wouldn't save much money by doing it myself but I know some people who have been less than ecstatic with the results they got from the pro blasters.

Yeah I saw this about a year ago when my friend in Lawrence was thinking of painting his car there. Seems like they had lots of options for the diy'er.. You could rent paint guns and any other equipment needed to paint a car iirc. Never had personal experience with it but glad you chimed in.
