In late april I posted the problem and found that the spark plugs were messed up (see link). Well 8 months and less than 5K miles later it did it again. What could be the problem???

Here are tonight's pictures of the "new" plugs. Sorry, they are not that clear...

Thanks,

Luis

Check yer coil or igniter...

Pick one... I can't tell by those pics...

spark plug chart - Google Search

Got this from google:
Heavy ash deposits on the insulator nose resulting from oil and fuel additives, in the scavening area and on the ground electrode. The structure of the ash is loose to cinder-like.
Cause: Alloying constituents, particularly from engine oil, can deposit this ash in the combustion chamber and on the spark-plug face.
Effects: Can lead to auto-ignition with loss of power and possible engine damage.
Remedy: Repair the engine. Fit new spark plugs. Possibly change engine-oil type.

Looks like heavy ash on the plugs to me... i use vavoline oil and never add additives (oil or fuel). Any recommendation on other brands to use? Any other suggestions?

Check yer coil or igniter...

What should I check for?

Thanks Hilux!,

wow,
is the plug with the eroded ground from the same cylinder?

is there any burn traces in side your dist cap?

if your plugs look that bad I wonder what the rest of the combustion chamber looks like!!!

almost looks like sugar burned on there.

I just had a buddy asking why his four runner was missing.

he had 147,000 miles on the original plugs and they didn't look as bad as either picture of yours.

wow that linked thread, that one plug looked like detonation!i could be wrong though.
the pics on this thread as crappy as they are looks like the plugs intact but severely fowled, even corroded if you will, and with out better pics i can not really tell.

sorry about the pics, crappy camera not good with close-ups. here another pic which is not much better. The plugs look the same, ash buildup, as the link other that the fact that the ground electrodes are still intact.

It's no secret you need to find the source of the build up on the plugs. Have you adjusted your timing or valves lately? If a valve is staying open that may lead to one plug getting carbon build up but all 4 would be more like all the valves out of adjustment or burnt valves.

The other idea on the problem would be oil in the cylinders, worn rings, bad PVC, high sulfer content in fuel.

I'd try adjusting the valves and set your timing. Next try new (PVC, wires, cap & rotor) from Toyota and hotter plugs from your parts store. Try a plug that has three prongs they burn more even and cleaner. Most inportant change gas brands/stations.

If you find you have a carbon build up you may want to look at an engine valve cleaner. Toyota makes one but you can find one at your local parts store. K44 is a great one but I warn you follow the instructions to the T it is very strong. It will blow the carbon out in one treatment.

Just an idea or two for ya to try.
