Now I was down the local auto shop the other day and preparing for firing up the rebuilt/recond 1HDT motor.
So wanted to grab myself some running in oil.

The only option in this store was Penrite (pic attached).
Last time I did rebuilds was for petrol engines and using Penzoil.

I know technology in oils has come a long way and some oils are specd for both petrol and diesel.

My question, is it really the same running in oil between diesel and petrol engines?

To break in my 3L hilux engine I used cheap dino oil. It worked great. Go to the store and buy the cheapest conventional oil they sell. You don't want all the fancy wear additives, they will increase the time it takes to wear in the rings. That stuff says "light-duty diesels", I would think the 1HD-T qualifies. It is probably fine.

Drive hard and vary the engine RPMs for the first 500 miles. I hooked up a trailer and drove hard 50 miles at a time letting the engine cool down in between. At 500 or so miles drain, change oil and filter and you're good to go.

You will know the rings have worn in when it stops burning oil usually a hundred or so miles into the break-in.

for break in oil the special diesel additives are not that important because your not going to run the oil long enough to build up enough soot that you need the special additives.

that being said I do run driven diesel break in oil because it's easy for me to get here in the states.

On Aussie cruiser forums, it was really common for guys to rebuild these, then complain about oil consumption issues 5000km in.
Almost always turns out they baby the new engine like the pistons are made of glass.

Run it hard enough you get it up to full operating temp, and vary the load and RPMs

using engine braking helps too, ie slowing down downhill in a lower gears
always part of my break-in procedure
