Luke and I have been talking about going to Rubithon this year so I figured I would start a thread about it to see if anyone else was thinking of going.
I'm pretty darn excited about this, The adventure is high on my end of things. 1,250 miles and almost 20 hours away........in a vehicle designed for about 35% highway driving and 65% off road use. What will happen? will I roll over? shatter my sector shaft? Blow another engine? Destroy my transfer case? Will the 4runner make it back in one piece? Who knows. That what makes it fun and exciting!
I have decided that in my lifetime, I will make it to run the Rubicon trail come hell or high water, because living in the southeast my dream was always to run the famed Tellico trail system in North Carolina. I waited too long, and now that dream is dead. A little piece of my 4x4 dream died with that trail, and I don't want that to happen again. I figure the Rubicon trail (or toilet paper trail, as it's come to be known) will be gone within the next 10 years, maybe sooner. If you want to go, now is the time!!!!!
My brother and I are doing a Moab thing the first week of Sept & have another 10 days free--any interest in doing it then? How built do I need to be? I'm currently lifted @ 3 inches with some sliders and will be adding rear locker and winch soon--will that be Rubi-worthy?
Well, my dreams might be crushed--My transmission decided to quit shifting today. Bad deal, left me stranded with my camper at the Home Depot on Powers and Woodmen. I don't think it's ruined, I'm thinking it has trash in the valve body......hopefully, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks goes to Rui who happened along and offered to let me use his receiver hitch to put on my aunt's 4runner so she could pull my camper home, and Andy who currently has a 4runner with a transmission problem in his driveway. I'll get that moved Monday. It's great to have club friends to help out, you guys rock!
Geez--rollover in 2008, blown engine in 2009, and a bad tranny in 2010????? maybe I should take up knitting or something.
Its a bit after the fact now, but I live really close to that Home Depot. (Woodmen and Rangewood) Not that it helped you today but should you be stranded in that same location again let me know!
lol, thanks Ryan. If I break down in the same spot again, I'm sticking a 4 sale sign and leaving it there. I've just about had enough of my bad luck 4runner.
Took the 4runner to a trans shop today, they drove it and pulled the dipstick, and told me they didn't need to go any further--it's fried. Haven't pulled the pan yet, but I will this week. Need to see how much junk contaminated the fluid to decide whether or not I need a new torque converter. I did drive it home up the pass and it was awful, getting the trans to shift takes sticking the throttle until you hit exactly 4,500 RPM. 4,500 is when the governor shifts it no matter what. Overdrive is optional at this point, it works sometimes and sometimes not so much.
So I have been looking on Jegs.com and decided to purchase a rebuild kit and a book and go for broke rebuilding it myself. Worst that can happen, I throw away 250 bucks. Best case, the thing works and I saved a bunch of money and learned something along the way. Hell, even if it only works for two years, the rebuild kits are so cheap ($183) I'll rebuild the damn thing again. I'm glad I have a 700r4 instead of the stock 4runner tranny, there is a lot of support and parts online for the GM overdrive.
Seeing my rig at a shop killed me, it hasn't been to a shop since I've owned it, I think it was feeling abandoned.
Id Love to make it to the Rubicon! i just dont think this year is going to be the one..
Luke, Sorry bro, I would love to see the insides of that beast when you tear into it, give me a call.. id also like to help and learn how to do it when mine decides to blow up!
