Getting around to some other great maintenance now. For example, plugs, wires (replacing a 2005 Toyota set!), seals, valve cover gasket, PCV and grommet, distributor o-ring, cap and rotor, and heater valve and nearby hoses.
All Toyota except the heater valve (so I don't get heat dumped in the cabin any more) and hose. Yes, the PCV grommet was totally dried out. The distributor o-ring was even worse and seems to have been leaking oil for a good while (hope I got the timing right on reinstall). The valve cover gasket was in better shape despite visibly weeping oil, but still a bit hardened.
For the most part the PO seems to have also used Toyota stuff, except for plugs (NGK) and plug seals...which honestly fell out of the cover when I removed it. (Now I know how water got into the engine at a car wash in Panama!) Perhaps aftermarket smaller seemed like a good idea to whomever did the below to get out a previous set of seals...:/.

Engine (and intake, etc) is honestly a bit gunked. Not sure if me/central America or the PO is at fault. I cleaned the throttle body and valve cover, though not to perfection, just trying to reinstall a bit less dirt than I removed.

NB my pipe between the PHH and the heater valve is corroding/rotting. Going to have to get around to a PHH bypass at some point but probably not this go-round! (PO did PHH.)

NGK are an OE supplier for spark plugs. So is Denso. In fact, some of the V6 and V8 engines come with one side NGK and one side Denso

Interesting! My Toyota plugs just installed are Densos, so I assumed...wrongly, I gather.
BTW Slim, I grew up in UT - if it isn't the greatest outdoor state, I don't know what is.

Word from the parts gurus is that Toyota sources from both about equally. *shrug*.

I grew up here too, and i can say for sure that when i leave here, i appreciate the variety that we have. So many states are just so much of the same over and over.

I dunno, doesn't have the slickrock deserts.

Hi all,
Getting towards the end of our (Central American) Pan-American journey now, the FZJ80 is scheduled to go into a container on Friday in Colon Panama. However, we've had an issue today, or a few issues perhaps, that are giving me a bit of pause.

We had the car washed today including a bit of a spray at the motor to wash off some of the gunk for customs inspection. Afterwards I observed that there was a LOT of shudder, especially when I shifted into drive. I was thinking that some water had gotten somewhere it shouldn't have.

However, the shudder went away over the course of the rest of the day's driving, replaced by a new issue: the car seems to slip into neutral if you are attempting to accelerate up a hill at around 50mph. I would say that it's right at the point where it would usually downshift to give a bit more power.

I should give a bit of background in that the transmission hump, and possibly the engine itself, has HUGELY heated up over the past few months when climbing. I notice this especially because I ripped out the original center console and replaced it with a Tuffy (thanks for that mod everyone!) and there isn't a lot preventing heat transmission from the hump to the passenger compartment. I attributed this potentially to needing something like a new air filter or fuel filter, or just heat due to the humidity and heat we are experiencing in Central America, but perhaps it is in fact the transmission having some issues?

To check the engine itself, when we parked, I put the brake on and put the car in neutral and revved it - nothing sounded bad at all.

I saw the thread below, and the other thread where Dan suggested shift solenoids, and that would probably be my first stop, but any other thoughts? Moreover, can anyone put my mind at ease that the LC is not going to totally expire imminently, because we're about to spend some cash on containering it back to the US of A.

Thanks in advance!! Michael

My NSS prong got water on it and corroded the plug out. My gears are all over the place and rough

True. But Utah doesn't have Coeur d'Alene nor Priest Lake nor the Cleatwater nor Lochsa nor Salmon nor Payette nor Snake rivers. It's a different geography. I guess different strokes for different folks.
