Rotor warp and warranty

So the final answer is that the rotors are covered (but not the pads) until 36k. They re-turned the rotors. They said the based on their thickness the last turn was probably a very very light turn and did little more than take some stuff off the surface. They said the thickness was akin to essentially not having them turned at all. The did a much more thorough job and I can tell the difference certainly just in driving off the lot.

That pads were replaced when I first "turned" the rotors so they were not an issue.

As always, thanks all for the help.

I skimmed the thread, so forgive me if I missed it and it's been covered already. A truly warped rotor cannot be turned successfully, it will warp again, in less time, and under less stressful braking conditions.

The dealer is being cheap, new rotor time. Good luck.

The dealer being cheap? No. No way. This is preposterous! Lies!

About what I figured, but it gives me some time to take care of everything else I have to outside of my car before I have to get into replacing the rotors.

These don't warp, but they get hot, very hot!

Is that on the Bus? I always love seeing the box fans brought out after landing in Denver on those.

The 763 can get pretty hot too. The long taxi in Amsterdam frequently sees hot brakes. And no warpage either!

I had a 2014 Sienna bought new. Then I brought it in for service where they rotated the tire. 3000 miles later, I felt a vibration on the steering wheel and foot pedal. Turns out the tech used an impact to tighten the lug nuts. The dealer did turn all four rotors for free. But the vibration came back after 5000 miles. I went back the second time and they refused to replace it and turn it again. Dealers are most likely to turn rather than replace the rotors.

Whats the story behind your avatar?

On the 75 and 76 at a company that you’d see a lot flying out of KDEN.

Thought as much.

Back to your topic. If the dealer doesn't play ball, take the gripe directly to Toyota. Others on this forum have had success with customer service covering some if not all of the cost. In my case it was related to the recirc door issue, and was in the form of a reimbursement after the fact.

HTH.

Just checked.. new rotors are 32mm, 29mm is the minimum thickness before replacement. FYI. Mine were right at 29mm when removed.. but had been turned a few times and driven 60k miles, per the service history.

If you really feel you are being unfairly or dishonestly dealt with (and if you don’t...skip this...but if you DO)...

-WRITE, MAIL & CC Toyota Customer care & the service manager a letter stating you don’t feel safe given their compromised resolution for warranty brake/rotor work.

**MAGICALLY**...resolutions can change.

-As my old executive boss used to tell me...

“Let it be mentioned...Let it be—
—Let it be written...Let it be done.”

:)

FYI: Right Toyota in Scottsdale just informed me that brakes and rotors are considered wear items and are most certainly NOT covered by my Toyota warranty - no matter what some people on the internet are saying. $500+ for replacing LF rotor, turning RF rotor and replacing pads. Think I just got screwed...

Before 36k the pads weren't covered but the rotors were. After 36k, it's all on you.

I think the only thing you were hosed on was turning one rotor and then replacing another. That sounds awful. So you now have one rotor that is significantly thinner than the other? I'd take that truck right back and tell them absolutely not and get Toyota corporate involved.

Also, I've heard nothing but good things about Camelback (in fact that's who I bought my brake parts from) Toyota somehwere out near Scottsdale.

Sidenote: replaced my rotors at 40k. Aforementioned Camelback did the parts, and @duggy did the work. Night and day difference.
