Maggiolina AirLand Prices

Mike, i hope this hasn't allready been asked and if so i appologize, but for a regular customer (by that i mean no special deals or discounts, just regular price), how much would that tent cost delivered to NC?

I PM'd you with that information. No secret, just don't want to be "selling" in the forums. Check the website for details if you're are curious...

Hi guys, firt post here. Can't wait to get my rooftop tent down here in Guatemala from Mike. I have been surfing the forum and found great ideas on how to fit my 1/4 ton CDN to the large OverLand. Still not totally sure how to mount the tent onto the trailer. Can I space the crossbars (am considering 3 for better weight distribution) about 2 feet apart (the trailer is about 6 feet long)? What is the size/diameter of the crossbars I need to attach the tent hardware to them? Thanks!

Karl

I used Thule load bars and their gutter mount feet in the lid of my trailer to mount the tent. The Large OverLand is 71" front to back - and the two bars should be about 50" apart. You could add a third bar between the front and rear bars for weight distribution.

PIMP MY RIDE

For those of you into this stuff, PMR on MTV this week has an episode remaking a 1973 VW THING. Amongst other goodies, the THING has an AutoHome Columbus roof top tent.

Check out episode 402 - "1973 VW THING"

I saw the end of that one..

How do they plan on operating the soft-top on the Thing with a tent on it? You notice at the end of the show they show her driving around without the tent on top..

An important question, for which I have no answer.

Just curious, Will that sticker come off, or is it clear-coated over ? I want one of those tents, but I hate logos ;p

keep the pics coming !

Hey Mike,
I would buy one of the Magiollina's if you could enter it from the front or back rather than from the side.
Can you do that?

I think that, for what they are, the price is reasonable but I don't like the ladder sticking out to the side. If the entrance were on the end of the tent you could gain access by way of a bumper or lift gate ladder. It would be one less part to carry and you could still camp in Wal-mart parking lots and other such less than ideal camp sites where you are only allowed your vehicles footprint.

I agree that rear entry is a good thing (OK, fellas, relax, I'm talkin' tents here!). The Maggiolina has a stainless scissors lift at from and rear to lift and lower the top, So you can enter only from the sides.

The Columbus Variant provides a vented, double rear entry door at the rear. Here is a picture of Mudrak's Columbus Variant small on his FJ45 trayback. He loves this tent, and takes it on all the runs - Rubicon included. These are very accessible - you can enter on three sides. Also see the picture posted on Mike's (asking for photos of a Columbus on an 80) thread in this forum.

The tent is gel coated, not clearcoated. The sticker is a decal. You can remove it with appropriate adhesive softener. So you could put like a Toyota Landcruiser logo on the tent... or whatever.

You can also paint these tents to match your truck, but we do not recommend dark colors - too hot.

I want you to have one of these tents, too. ;-)

Here's a picture for you - FJ40 (just like my old 40), Adventuretrailers Horizon with Maggiolina fitted.

Ok, so that is a door on the end of the columbus, and it can be opened from the out side?
I was wondering if that was the case.
I still prefer the straight up box of the maggiolina so it would be cool if they could switch the scissor lift to the sides as an option. If not the columbus is still pretty durn cool.
Thanks for the info.

Howdy from Alaska...

I put together a small web page with some photos of the Maggiolina Small roof top tent

HERE

Feel free to ask any questions about how it works ;)

Is the outside light noticeable from the inside of popup tent?

Maybe the windbreaker (winter canvas) will make interior even darker?

Your trip BEFORE the 06 trip is worthy to print on TT!

Cheers,

I did not hook up my light yet , but I imagine you would see it, along with the many hungry Mosquitoes up here in the north :D

Yes the windbreaker could make it darker, by the time we get to thinking about sleep up here it is 2:30 am so sleeping in the light does not make too much difference.

The Maggiolina tent has been a real hit up here in Alaska - I have spoke to many folks about it

Thanks for reading the blogs

A twist on rooftop tents

I saw this on an overland expdition site and thought that it was an interesting thought, not that I would do it, but that if was creative. I wonder how much work it was. (If I can remember where I got it, I will give the owners credit.) I assume that it would be like the clamshell tent that Mike offers, except that you enter from inside your vehicle.... I know that in one of these tent threads someone was wondering if you could set a tent up that way... anyway, enjoy.

On a side note, has anyone ever used a Westfalla camper van??? Whats it like in wet or cold weather? (Just rambling...)
