As I am moving closer to finishing my doors my mind wanders to the roof:(. I can't remember where it was but I noticed a cruiser with a roof that had ridges in it- running length wise. It was commented on and then later I heard that it might be off an Astro Van? I am not sure tho.

General plan it to replace the roof with a pop top. I would love to be able to stand up in the back of the rig and as well be able to sleep up above. The goal will be not to change the original roof line, but to make it look like every other 55 out there.

Am I dreaming?

With the roof that I have I have already tried fiberglassing and it has now bubbled through so I really have nothing to loose.

The ribbed roof came from an Econoline Ford Van.

Can tell you from experience that an E-350 won't hold up under the centralized weight of an average person, but gutter mounted ladder racks can hold up to 900lbs worth of ladders, tools, cords, and a few miscellaneous steel framing sections.

(Thought I had a pic of the above, but can't find on iPhone. Will locate, 'cause it's hilarious and highlights the intelligence today's workforce.)

I remember it but I thought it was an Ecoline donnor. If my memory is good, a cut in the middle (long axis) and welded to get the good size.

Do you get a closer pic of what yon did. I was thinking to fiberglass mine.

Do you want to open the roof just in the cargo area?

I was thinking that the roof would pop up the needed height and I would support it all with a framework of some sort of steel. The roof would not need to support any weight. Well actually I would want it to support the rack that will be used on top, but no bodies.

I was thinking that the whole thing would pop up. I would have to cut just aft of the front window.

I have seen some fj45s that had the top that I was imagining. There is this one on line that is yellow. Its kinda what I am envisioning

seriously, why not a tent on a roofrack? when you don't need it you remove it. seems more simple

I've thought about this, off and on and I think one reason for the pop top is climbing up from the inside. You don't have to climb a big ladder, in the rain, etc.

I like the ones on the Rovers and the one being made for the FJ60. Wouldn't mind trying it on the parts wagon, first.
