I've spoken with this guy when the original clearance offer was posted. He knew Mel and Mel knows him. Between the two of them I know more about the tents than I care to remember. IIRC this guy knew more and was more forthwright with the tents shortcomings than Mel was. He also has/had a couple of other RTT makes for his own use. I'd take him up on the offer as it sounds like these are going for $50 -$75 less after shipping than Mel's deal was. I think he put a couple on ebay recently too.

So what are some of the shortcomings 'cause this is a helluva deal!

Might have to see if the 'rents will help me out w/ this for a X-mas present.

I would like to echo the sentiments above regarding paypal. I'd happily pay the extra 3% for the security of paypal should something go wrong.

shortcomings

-overall quality is sort of costco-ish
-ladder is ridiculous
-fly is inadequate if it rains where you live and tent does not seem to have adequate base waterproofing
-tent has weird open flap where it hinges open on both sides. needs more velcro!
-mounting system is fairly mickey mouse - you need to replace the ubolts supplied to prevent it sliding on the rack with hose clamps and some rubber ($5 mod)

strengths
-it's a roof top tent for very little
-it works
-it's huge
-mattress seems fine
-ladder does work even if it sucks

i paid $325 plus shipping and am happy

I am also in negotiations with a local boat canvas guy to make a replacement fly for it out of tarp material. if i am happy maybe he can address it's biggest shortcoming for others.

well lets see.

first ladder.- it works and its strong- its not as easy to set it up as an eezi awn ladder,.

matress--- i like it alot.

rain fly-- it will be better if it was extended to the front and
top of the windows, it can be done.

base-- the base is aluminum frame covered with masonite board
actualy the outside board serves the purpouse of keeping the insulation in place .

the base is insulated, to my surprice., the tent is well built
i put it to the test and I took one and removed every thing from it,
including ribbets, hinges, poles, awning etc etc, i was surprices how
strong the tent was and how well built the base is.

lets put is this way, if you gonna buy a tent of this price you can either buy this or buy a ground tent or even a tent cot double "265"lol,,,.

this tent will outlast any ground tent i know, and it might last you forever. its not an ezzi awn or a maggiolina but its a great tent,
proof is everyone hat have bought one on this forum are happy.

and dont forget ,this tents were 900 dollars last year.

What is the advantage of having a tent on top of your truck rather than on the ground?

Just curious

Dont know that there are any great advantages. I had one for awhile but it was much bigger and heavier than the one being sold here. I ended up getting rid of it and used a regular tent for several years. Recently I started wanting a rooftop tent again for the ease of setup which literally took me just a few minutes rather than messing with poles and stakes during a rain storm. Just open it and climb in. The built in pad is nice and comfy. Disadvantages would be getting up to pee in the night, think about keeping a pee bottle in the tent and make sure you don't confuse it with your water bottle:doh: .
High winds can be kind of exciting while in a roof top tent.

Consider that a good North Face or Mountain Hardware tent costs about $500, for almost half that you can have a really bitchin rooftop tent and look like you belong in the African Outback. People will look at you and people will want to be you:D You cant get that sleeping on the ground.

Do other brands of rooftop tents have a hard plastic cover or something?

This looks like a great deal but, alot of stuff I go through has mud. Looks like you could ruin this real quick if you went through a good mud hole on your way to camping???

Yeah rooftop tents look cool, but for now I just sleep in the back of my cruiser. (Family isnt quite old enough to go with me yet.)

Thoughts ideas?

the only purpose of the mount, IMO is to keep it in place when travelling. There's really not much to it. The weight of the tent and the occupants rest on the load bars you're using...so whether it be thule or yakima or whatever, that's what's holding most of your weight.

if doug is not concerned, I would not be ;)

the half of the tent that rests on the load bars is plenty sturdy. the other half that rests on the ladder less so, but certainly safe for people to sleep in. if you have wide load bars you can set it up so the ladder half partly rests on these.

I've had 400lbs worth of warm bodies up there and all was well. Common sense seams to point toward keeping most of the weight over the load bars. I had three little girls bouncing around up there and the corners would bend a bit with each bounce.
