The roof rack on my 93 is starting to look its age...

Any ideas or tips on how to restore it? Paint it?

Henry

To make mine look better I removed it...and folded it up and threw it away. It has NEVER looked so good! :D...

If you havn't check for rust under the feet I would. There is a lot of information in the archives about this.."rust prevention mod."

IIRC the US wouldn't let them import the 80 with a roof rack so they were all port installed. Which brings up pictures in my head of hundreds of 80's sitting side by side as far as you can see. Then I see "them" giving a drill and $2.00 worth of screws and nutserts to a 18 year old kid and telling him to go drill 8 holes in the roof of all of these $45,XXX brand new rigs..

Ok so it might not be quite that bad...:D

To restore mine (after checking for rust and getting rubber gaskets) I just used acetone to clean up the rails (both the aluminum and plastic ends) and then painted with some cheap black spray paint from wally world. I think I used 1 can and it was 94 cents for gloss black. I also sprayed the rear deflector too. About 2 coats each. This was off of the truck of course. Looks shiney and fairly new to me now.

...suprisingly no signs of rust...

Did you remove all 4 pads? Were they worn down to metal or just to the primer? No rust inside the nutserts?

You can also peek between the headliner and roof by removing the molding on the sunroof and shine a flashlight to see the rust on the underside of the nutserts. The rust is there.
