I'm not sure I'm using the correct verbiage for the parts I'm trying to identify. I have a 87 4runner with 400,000 miles and the stock auto locking front hubs. I was wheeling in eastern Ore and Wa and one of the rear axle bearings started going out. I limped to a friends and installed new bearings in both sides but then noticed the front axle, were the cv axle bolts onto the stub axle, on the passenger side, was wobbly. I pulled the axle and it appears the ring/pinion carrier on the passenger side is worn. I haven't been able to locate a used one. I'm wondering if I can't find a donor carrier can I put it back together and unbolt both of the cv axles where it bolts to the stub axle and drive it 700m back home?? Thanks, Bobb

Bobb - I guess I'll try to answer your pressing question, which is, can you unbolt the CV axles and drive the truck. If I recall the ADD front hubs, they wheel hubs are engaged all the time and there is an actuator on the tube of the front differential that actually engages stub shaft, right? I think you would need to remove the CV axles completely so they aren't flailing around down there, so unbolt the stub axle end and remove the clip and yank them out of the wheel hub end as well. I've never owned a truck with the ADD flanges, but I don't see why they would be a problem.

Boy, even thinking about these ADD hubs makes me glad that I have the manual hubs. As for your stub axle being wobbly, did it just perhaps pull out of carrier? As far as I know, there is nothing really that keeps it in there. See if you can line up the splines and push it back in there.

Ring/pinion

Thanks for the reply, yes I would pull the both cv axles. I mic'ed the sleeve in the carrier and the passenger side is larger than the other side. I found a ring/pinion carrier for sale on craigslist so I am headed out to see if it's any better than the one I have. Again, thank you very much for the response. bobb

No ADD in 1987. Didn't come out till later.

KLF - I think I mistook auto locking hubs for ADD. I think I understand ADD, but no idea what the auto locking hubs mean...well other than I guess you don't have to manually turn a dial. I'll google it and see the difference, thanks for the clarification.

In the mid-late 80's, Toyota was taking heat from other manufacturers because all their trucks had manual hubs, I seem to remember a TV ad back then from (I think) Isuzu making a big deal about it. So, they came out with these dreadful "Automatic" hubs. They suck. They lock and unlock randomly, and don't stay locked when you need them. Best thing to do when you see them is take them off and install good 'ol manual AISIN hubs.

Then in '89 or '90, they came out with ADD, with fixed plates on the wheel hubs, and the vacuum-actuated sliding sleeve in the front diff. I suppose it's a better system than the Auto hubs, but they do mean your CV axles are always spinning. Again, best solution is engage the ADD in the diff, disconnect the vacuum lines, then install manual hubs.
