For the most part the majority of us will have our CTT on the same vehicle so ladder height should be consistent.

With that said what about taking one piece of an traditional extension ladder and then cutting it to size. You could then cut this downsized piece in half and add hinges so that it folded in two. If you were set up to weld aluminum you could beef up the cuts where the hinges are and put in some flat plate so that you would make better contact at the hinge.

I like the thought, but I think in the end, this would be pretty bulky and may not fit under the supplied cover any longer

I dont have mine yet, but does there seem to be a way to "beef up" the existing ladder that comes with the tent?

I'm already planning mods (ladder/rainfly)on a tent I havent even seen yet! :D Guess it's the Cruiser bug again

Earlier in this thread I asked Mike S. (who hosts autohomeusa website I think) about the possibility of a group buy for ladders. He has yet to respond.

Shoot him a PM.

OK just got off the phone with mel...

They never had any kid of feedback on the tent as they are wholesalers and the retailers never said anything. They are still go to carry this tent just an upgraded version of it...

They are addressing things like the ladder and adding a better rain fly. i asked him if these upgrades will be available to the public stand alone and he said yes. so any of the flaws now will be able to be upgraded later..

Mel is one Cool ass guy!!!

aren't there also these multifolding ladder affairs that Costco used to sell, that seemed pretty adjustable. Something like $60?

Tadahh!

Got it up on top! Managed it by myself despite the wind and the fact I barely outweigh it. Worth the money IMO. I plan on shimming the mounts so they don't move at all and upgrading the cotter pins. My Thule bars just barely clear the stock rack so I plan to leave it attached to them when I remove it to store. Here's a pic of the kid in her new play room.

That is impressive- I had enough trouble putting it into the car as it was. Haven't gotten to put it on the roof yet, hopefully some desert camping this weekend.

As for the tent, very cool- and holy s*@t is it roomy! Only problem i have is that there's not a lot of places to store it in an apartment when it's not on the truck. right now it takes up the living room floor, but the roomate isn't so happy with it...

I did a couple days ago. No response yet.

I know what you're talking about, but it would be a kludey fix. A ladder designed for a RTT is what's needed.

OKAY! GOT THE MO-FO UNBOXED AND MOUNTED
:D

WTF? Who had stock in the ACME Cotter Pin Company? Freakin' cotter pins everywhere.

One manufacturing flaw on mine is that the DS cotter pin that holds the tent onto the bar was tucked into the tent. I couldn't pull it out. I'll undo an allen-head screw next to where it's stuck and should be able to get it out.

The ladder...well...how can I put this delicately...

THE LADDER SUCKS

Now that's I've gotten that out of my system, I think it's a great value. The tent pops right open. It's very roomy. I haven't climbed in yet, but it looks like the ladder will hold me :grinpimp: I took a couple steps up as my 2 :princess:es clammered into it.

I'm very happy with mine.

I'll have pics and a more detailed review after my trip this weekend.

How many U-bolts did you guys get? I got 2...I would've expected 4.

not yet. haven't unpacked it yet.
I'm hoping to have time tonight...if I do, I'll be taking it on the trail with me this weekend.

My main concern is the ladder....and if it'll be up to the task of holding my large ass as I haul myself up. :D
Hi Doug
Thanks for the review up above. I to was wondering about it holding my LARGE ass also. Will you tell me how the ladder and the unsupported side feel to you after your trip?
Is the RTT for you or the kids to sleep in, If you I am real interested in your opinion as we are close in size.
Thanks Doug

No problem...You can store it at my place :)

Just bring the rack as well...Now, to figure out a way to fab it up to work on a FJ40 full roll cage...HMMM :D

One thing that I did notice is that I felt most comfortable on the ladder with it more vertical than angled out. The ladder didn't seem sturdy at all when it got too far off 90 degrees.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Pictures needed of NorCalDoug on the ladder!

You know, Doug, a man size ladder might be a good project with my new welder!

what about a pair of those loose sand recovery ladders that join up to form a doug sized rtt ladder? that would let you look all expedition with them hung on the side of the truck.

It'd be a long drive from Tempe AZ to Littleton...haha. I think it'll be used as a living room partition stood on its side behind a couch. Before that happens, actual camp testing will commence tomorrow!

Did your tent come with a vinyl cover or a heavy fabric material cover (like Carhart material)?

Just wondering mine is more like a heavy canvas.

Rezarf <><
