Hi all, has anyone tried finding a wire to splice into to have the reverse camera on with a switch on the dash (or center console) in addition to when the gear selector is in reverse? I'd be OK with the reverse lights coming in as well when I switch it on. This function would be for off roading and trailer towing.

Anyone made any progress here? I’d love to splice in and trick the system into thinking I’m in R so that I can access the camera anytime, via a switch.

When I added the rear bumper I added a WiFi camera. It can be viewed on any phone or tablet. For the few times I need it totally acceptable solution. Takes less than 5 seconds to say hey Siri start app to viewing the image. It can record and be on if you want when not in reverse. I think it was $35. It isn’t a lot less wiring as you still have to get power and reverse signal out to the bumper. I used the trailer wiring as the source.

Others have hardwired in a separate camera and dedicated monitor.

The pin out is four wires. The main obstacle for me was pulling the trim on the rear hatch, I’ve done it on several other cars and always end up breaking loads of clips. Also I’m trying to take advantage of technology to make my build simpler, and wiring into the cabin just to switch power / relays isn’t necessary with Bluetooth WiFi and rf solutions availabile.
