We did a little trip last weekend. The excuse was to try to find the ghost town of Reveille. We never found it, but that didn't stop us from having a lot of fun.
Friday afternoon we headed south to Tonopah. If you stay in Tonopah I recommend the Best Western, it is by far the nicest place in town. They also take pets and provide a decent breakfast with the price of the room. We ate at El Marquise, average Americanized Mexican fare at best.
Saturday morning we were up and eating breakfast when they opened at 6:00, by 7:15 we were on the road. About 50 miles east of town we turned off of HWY6 on to NSR375, the Extraterrestrial Highway. The turn to Reveille is about 15 miles from the intersection, but I wanted to take a look at another canyon further down the road so we continued on until we reached the road to Fang Ridge. We messed around there for a while, our gas was a concern so we didn't drive all the way up to the ridge, but we got close enough to know we would like to come back and explore it.

Backtracking to the turn off to Reville we continued began our search for the town site. I think if we had better maps we would have had more luck, as is was we covered a lot of mining roads and saw some pretty sights but no ghost town. Notice the spelling on the sign, signage on this trip was a running joke, literally. Once we left the highway there were no signs or directions at all.

Eventually we gave up and headed back to the highway, it turns out the road we took was through a wash and had some of the most challenging driving of the trip. It was one of those gravely sandy roads with tall berms, the kind of road you have to keep your speed up on or risk slipping into the ruts and high centering. The wash started right after this.

Backtracking, again, on NSR375 we found the turn to Reveille Valley, and the Reveille mill site.

Yet another reason to get a diesel, fuel depots are easier to find.

We messed around out in the sticks for the rest of the day then headed back to Tonopah. We ate at the Station Casino, kind of meh food but dining options are limited. We would have done well to bring some food that we could have re-heated in the hotel room Microwave on this trip, or grilled an early dinner before we came back to town.
