I recently purchased a 1991 FJ80. The previous owner got it running after last year after it sat for 11 years. He removed the tank and cleaned out the rust. He also installed a replacement bracket, level sender, new pump, and pre-filter.

I am having issues consistent with a clog pre-filter. I pulled the assembly out this afternoon and discovered the bottom is filled with rusty muddy type material.

Time to replace the tank since it has to come out. I’d rather not clean it out and end up back here. I’m considering a new tank from Toyota, a new Dorman tank, or a good used tank. It appears the Dorman really isn’t much less than a new Toyota, but it’s available within a few days. eBay has a few used tanks, but after freight, most are 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a new tank. I’m not sure how long a new Toyota tank would take to get in at the dealer.

Any recommendations on which way to go?

I already have a Toyota pump, pre-filter (unfortunately Toyota NLA), and a few other items on order.

Have you tried taking it to a shop that specializes in cleaning and refurbing them? Radiator shops usually can do it. That is what I did with mine when I needed it, been good so far.

long range America if you have the coin. I wouldn't touch a dorman with a 10' pole. local used tank or genuine. I tried coating a tank on the inside with por15's product, it lasted like 5 years and lots of miles but did fail, pretty hard to properly prep the inside of a tank.

I did look at the LRA option, but they are estimating May delivery times. Also not sure I’m ready to throw $2,700 at this FJ80.

Tanks are in stock in US warehouses. Your dealer should be able to get one next day.

I would replace all the rubber lines between the filler tube and tank, while it's out. Much easier to do then than later. FWIW, the filler tube, if you need one, for the gas models is NLA, but the diesel filler tube is a direct replacement.

I have a 1996 fzj80 tank if you need one and will fit an fj80. I will let it go for $150 plus shipping. May need a larger box. Kinda clunky. In DFW.

Its in great shape tank only. No appurtenances (pump, sending unit etc.)

If the issue is the rust, it's easily fixed. Go to a YouTube channel called "backyard ballistics" and you'll find a very good formula (using citric acid) for completely removing the rust. He uses it, as the name suggests, for restoring old guns

removing the rust is one thing keeping the rust from coming back after its gone is another. you need to get in there and prep/paint the inside of the tank to keep it from coming back.
