Hey all

Looking to replace my OEM leaf springs, bushings, u-bolts, etc. 25 year old springs are flat as can be in the rear, and it makes hauling a trailer a joke...

Our ranch has purchased springs from Benz Springs in Portland, OR (Benz Spring Company Home Page) in the past, but they are telling me that they don't have the spec's for the rears. They either want a ton of info (see below) or some used springs for me to bring in (I'm 250 miles away) as a sample.

I provided them the part numbers from the local SE Washington dealer:

  • Left Hand, Front: 48110-60170
  • Right Hand, Front: 48110-60170
  • Left Hand, Rear: 48210-60250 (are these different?)
  • Right Hand, Rear: 48210-60280 (are these different?)
Can anyone tell me what the following are for OEM rear springs on an August of 1985 FJ60?

- Number of leaves
- Width of leaves
- Thickness of leaves
- Eye Size Front
- Eye Size Rear
- Center Bolt
- Reb. Clips on which leaf
- Length of Shortest Leaf
- Center Bolt to front eye
- Center Bolt to rear Eye
- Bushed and Ground to:
- Arch:

I've shot a PM to CruiserDan for pricing on the u-bolt assemblies, as Benz tells me that they don't have u-bolts in metric dimensions, and am waiting to hear back from him.

Any other suggestions? I want to stay stock/OEM on the dimensions, as this is just the family camper/raft hauler and the Mrs. prefers the stock look. Just running 235/75/15's on the rig.

And, for what it is worth, SOR's pricing is almost as high as the dealer's pricing...

Thanks for the tip - my only concern is the freight, as I can drive down to Portland if I get them fabricated at Benz. I could see if he has the dimensions though...

I was in a spring shop in the SF bay area a few weeks ago and they had a book with spring specs for every rig you could think of including land cruisers. Also, I bought a set of fj60 axels a while back with the springs still attached and the fronts were replacement springs made by Triangle spring co. You might do some searching and see if they make rears also.

Called Benz Springs in Portland, was told that they do have a book but that "25 year old LandCruisers are a bit out of the mainstream" and they don't have the specs? WTH? They did quote me $185 each for new springs on the front, but obviously I am kind of stuck on the rears.

Thoughts? Anyone got a vendor they've worked with in the past for OEM springs on a 60?

I did chat with CruiserDan, and was glad I did - while the part numbers for the springs do appear in the central Toyota parts database, they show as discontinued, which the local SE WA dealer didn't note.

Alcan makes custom springs for cruisers and have for many years. I got some for my FJ40 many years ago and have been happy with them.

Man-a-fre did have some stock height FJ60 Safari springs a couple of years ago, but they don't show up on their web site anymore.

Urban Landcruisers in Atlanta used to list stock springs as well.

I found all this out while looking for a mild 1-2 inch lift. From what I've read and people I've talked to, most of the aftermarket lift springs (including OME and HFS) are shorter than stock which is why they require anti-inversion shackles.

Well, my OME all sit with a proper shackle angle and as far as I remember, where no shorter.

The difference in ride quality between stock and OME was so drastic that it makes the small lift totally worth while.

I also wanted to keep my springs stock when I replaced in 2008... That said, I was convinced to go with OME springs (2" lift) and I am glad that I did. The ride is great. A little rough in the rear unloaded, but it rides better than my parents 1998 Mercedes ML.

I understand and that's what 90% of the consensus is. I'm just sayin what the competitors have told me- the reason you need anti-inversion shackles with the OME and others is because the springs are too short (shorter than stock).

The other one I didn't mention was the Comfort lift springs at Specter Off Road. They are supposedly closer to stock length.

Out of curiosity, why are you not just getting a set of OME replacement springs? Price or is it the spring height? 185 for each front and the rear will be more puts your very close to OME spring set. By the time you mess around getting them specs you could be done and rolling for close to the same money. ALso I have seen many OME rigs not running anti-inversion shackles. Kurt with cruiser outfitters is in you area and is one of the most knowledgeable OME venders I have every met.

I just pulled a tape on a set of OME springs and a set of stocks springs. Following the arc, and measuring eye to eye, they are almost identical. The reason OME provides the anti-inversion setup is to keep the spring from inverting if you are at full droop, and then smack your shackle on a rock. It's cheap, greasable insurance.

Thanks for the input all - I had looked into the OME setup, but wasn't interested in any lift.

Rekcut, so even though OME calls out a 2" lift you would think that it appears pretty much identical to the OEM height/dimensions? The price of $185 is pretty good, given that SOR is wanting $500 per corner...

I'll ring Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters today and see what his thoughts are.

I did check out the cruiserparts.net site, and they do have rears, but they are in used condition.

Look if you can find them i would go with the 3 leaf spring pack from Man-A-Fre i went with the parabolic 60 spring and man they are very nice.No i went with the 2 leaf pack and put them on a 73 fj40 but man what a diffrence i would do it agian in a heart beat.I don't tow with the 40 with 60 spring but ride down the road very nice and the light wheeling i'v done way better than stock.just my 2 cents .

Since you are seeking options, here are two others that haven't yet been posted on this thread...

1. Look for a set of used FJ62 rears. These have more leafs, and don't sag like the 60's did. There are enough folks going to lift springs, that there should be an excess of OEM sets around.

2. Put in a long add-a-leaf. This will bring you back up to near stock height, or maybe 1" higher.

From how you describe you use your 60, I'd lean towards using a set of the 62 springpack.

Not really sure where your getting the $500 per corner. This is the basic package form Cruiser outfitters.

Budget L/M Kit (Includes all MAIN components) Part# ED60BLM - $975.50
(Retail Price - $1289)

Includes:
2 - CS003F Front OME Emu Dakar Leaf Springs
2 - N88/92 Front Nitrocharger Shock Absorber (N88 gives firmer ride & positive feel)
2 - CS017R A/B Rear OME Emu Dakar Leaf Springs
2 - N94/N95 Rear Nitrocharger Shock Absorber
4 - SB1 OME Poly Spring Bushing Kits
1 - FK08 Rear Anti-Inversion Kit (when NOT using OME greasable shackles)

This setup is basically $250 a corner and includes shocks, shackles and bushings. If your looking at $185 for just springs a corner then its no comparision. If you ment $185 and end then its close.
