I would like to replace the dampener/strut in suspension seats from my BJ70. The dampener simply unbolts from the suspension seat assembly so it appears to be designed for replacement. However, the parts catalog lists only the part number for the complete suspension seat assembly [RH 73800-90K01; LH 73810-90K01]. No replacement parts within the suspension seat assembly are listed.

The part number stamped into the dampener/strut is 73890-90K00. It also has KYB and UJO stamped into the part (on separate lined below the P/N).

Has anyone ever found a replacement for dampener/strut as an aftermarket part or from Toyota? If so, where did you purchase and do you have an alternate P/N?

The dimensional data on the part is
8mm dia bolt goes through each end
Minimum Length (bolt centerline to bolt centerline) ~ 140 mm
Maximum Length (bolt centerline to bolt centerline ~ 180 mm

Thanks for all help and advice

Perhaps a stupid question but is the piston full of fluid or is it spring operated?

Charles, Based on construction, it looks like it is gas charged over oil (fluid) fill. I am fairly sure that it is not a spring; because once it is compressed, I had to pull it to extend.

Hoser, Thanks, but active control for the seat is a bit more complexity and cost than what I am looking for. Plus, the truck has a 24 volt electrical system so providing 12 volts just for the seat is more than hassle than is needed here.

The papers on the modeling of the seat dynamics was a nice change of pace. I have not read papers on the dynamics or control of a dynamic system since I did my thesis years ago. I was very rusty wading through but luckily I had the distant background.
The one paper was written by engineers at Lord. Just happens that Lord developed a dampener for a program I was managing a decade or so back. If I had only retained my contacts within Lord, I could have called up their engineers and asked for technical support. If I had only known.

Again thanks

Well I guess it's not as simple as a couple of new o-rings and a recharge.

Just responded to your message. No go from Mr. T and an online search by that Toyota part number yielded only this thread. Might be worth checking with KYB directly.

Update: I traded a few emails with KYB tech support team in the US. This part was designed in Japan and none of the tech data (or information that would aid cross referencing) is available to the US tech support team.

So I am waiting to for deepseacruiser's results with the ATV shock. Thanks

So the shock came in. I will post pictures when I get the opportunity but the shock does not extend long enough to make the connection it is shy by about an inch or more. as this is just a spring the actual length of the shock can not be extended longer than it is. Hope I am explaining this right

Do they make another version that might work or is the one you currently have their only product?

It should still work but the seat wont have as much travel as the shock is 1 inch shorter so the spring will take a bit of the extra load and hopefully stop any jarring.

UPDATE . So I managed to get the spring attached. It turned out my lock was broken and prevented me fully collapsing the seat. However the spring will not work. I believe it is either because the spring is to tough (1500lbs/in.) Printed on it. Or because either requires a dampened and not a spring to function correctly. Good news is my seats now work with the lock removed.
