why Scion

Can anyone explain why I would want a Scion HU?

Is this a nice upgrade to the stock FJ80 stereo? The satellite capability is nice. Would I need to buy an antenna to add to the head unit to use that funtionality or would I expect that to come with a head unit?

I am a FJ80 newbie and stereo dummy. Is it difficult to find aftermarket stereos to fit the stock location?

Thanks!

Chris

Basically it is a plug and play and the HU is superior to the stock LC HU in every way. Especially the price off of eBay. The SAT. capability is extra and somewhat pricy compared to a universal unit but it the controls are already integrated into the unit.

Cheap.....

With the exception of triming the front bezel, it is a easy install.

sounds great.

Better yet, get a single DIN unit and use the second slot for a high-quality CB with a front speaker. The wire coming out of the dash at the bottom of the picture plugs into my iPod.

Waiting to see if the real-time traffic will be offered in 2006 before I purchase though...

Cool
Since that pix was taken I have pulled the old Sat unit in the center console and added a plug and play Toyota sat unit I picked up from Cdan so I can use the touch screen on the Navi to work it :)

Love that install, and will definately go that way but just holding out hope that Toyota adds real-time traffic capability before they change the size/shape/mounting of the unit. Los Angeles has great weather but the roads...

Koffer,

I've been researching nav unit for a while and until I came across your writeup/post I was leaning towards an Eclispse unit. Now that I see the Toyota unit, I'm definitely going to go that route. My question for ya is did you need to purchase a JBL amp to use with it, or is that only for the 2006 model navigation. I think oemsales.com is only selling this year's model now. And did you have to run a hot wire to the antenna amplifier to get good radio reception? Some guys over on Yotatech did a similar install, but said they needed to power the antenna amp to get get any type of decent tuning.

I did have to get the amp and I just put it in the glove box (just sitting in there ) I didnt have to run a power line as the 80 has just a reg ant with no amp at least for the 96 .
I only needed to put the 2 wires for the backup light and speed sensor, rest was plug and play. The hardest part was trimming the dash face

Ok, good to know. Any chance you can put the amp somewhere besides the glove box, like under it or behind it? Or is there not enough space? And lastly, you got the 2005 model, but is there any difference between that and the 2003 and 2004 models? I know the 2006 looks slightly different.

When you are saying trim, are you trimming plastic off of the HU? Or are you using something else to make fit.

I saved a copy of that pin definition, but it does not match the one for my '91 Celica. Maybe it's because my Celica came from Toyota with a 6-Channel power amp mounted under the passenger seat? It was a 10 speaker system.

The head unit had 14 pins and the power amp another 16.

No matter... The head unit died twice. Paying to have it repaired a 2nd time wasn't wise. Had an after market unit installed at a shop that was clueless. Their installer shorted out the dash lights. That took me a long time to locate and remedy. And, they bypassed the 6-Channel power amp.

Well, I guess a power amp isn't really needed for AM talk radio now, is it?

Hoghead - I had to trim approx. 1/4 inch on each side. Basically so the face plate matched up to the metal case.
