I just wanted to post my recent experience since there's always a lot of discussion here concerning truck problems with no heat and motors running cool. Like many others have stated, our rig was running cool, little heat in front, but the rear heater was reasonably warm. This was strange since you wouldn't think either heat source would be warm if the thermostat was the problem!

Until now, our truck had never warmed above the 1/4 mark on the temp gauge during cold weather. I decided that replacing the thermostat would be a cheap place to start troubleshooting the system. I picked up a new Toyota Thermostat and gasket and started in...As soon as I got the top off, I saw part of the problem - no rubber seal on top of the old thermostat! Scraping away the old gasket took more time than anything and there was also a lot of mineral build-up where the seal should have been on top of the thermostat. This prevented the new seal from seating properly so I had to scrape away that heavy scale also.

Luckily when taking the 4 bolts out, none of them snapped (soaking in liquid wrench probably helped) and I was super happy about that! By the recommendations of others here, I replaced the bolts with studs and used nuts to secure the top housing - what a great improvement for future repairs! Studs in, new thermostat in place with rubber top seal, and RTV on both sides of new gasket...Top on thermostat and lightly tightened down the new nuts! I let everything sit for about an hour then cranked the truck, checked for leaks and pulled out of the garage. I knew I was in good shape when the truck quickly started warming much more quickly! I parked on a fairly steep incline with the radiator cap off and ran the heat for a while...Even with the system down about 1/2 gallon of coolant, it still quickly got the air out and warmed even more. I added more coolant and we threw the dogs in the truck to go for a ride and see how the heat was going to be when running normally.

I was amazed how quickly the system warmed up, the heat started flowing (actually hot) and within 10 minutes I was actually turning the heat down (definitely a first for this rig) even though the outside air temp was about 10 degrees F for us last night. Truck temp went to the middle of the temp gauge and stayed there! What a huge win!!

I highly recommend anyone with heating issues replace their thermostat and see what happens...

My new one arrived along with a new gasket and O ring, hoping to install it all tomorrow.

The mineral buildup and scale indicates non-distilled water mixed in with the antifreeze.

Great to have heat!

yes.... I would suspect the thermostat and related rubber washer on these trucks especially given that many have never been changed or the last time the thermostat was changed is unknown.

Also the upper thermostat housing dissolves over the decades where the thermostat upper rubber gasket seals. That white crud is mostly aluminum oxide corrosion.

As an FYI, there are two Toyota thermostats available for our trucks.

I, too, have been playing with thermostats, but for the opposite reason........ too much heat. The 2FE seems to want to run warmer than stock, so as the last piece in the cooling puzzle, I changed out what turned out to be a non-OEM thermostat.

Replacement was 190 degree OEM....Part #90916-03052

It lowered the gauge slightly, but not significantly enough to make me !00% comfortable, so a 180 degree OEM was the next installed...Part #90916-03014.* That got me where I needed to be.

And as others have said, cleaning out the crap and installing a new rubber gasket on the thermostat go a long way to help the cooling system.

*edit to correct typing error on part #

How much coolant do you lose when changing? Do I need to drain first? Thanks, need to do the job on the 62.

@DickM

The 90916-03145 (180*) Looks VERY different from the stock 90916-03052 (190*) - Don't think that's the correct part # for the 180*

Here's what I put on ours from ToyotaPartsDeal.com

90430-43002 GASKET
[Toyota | Land Cruiser | 1990 | USA | FJ62LG-PNEA] 2.67

16341-61020 GASKET, WATER OUTLET
[Toyota | Land Cruiser | 1990 | USA | FJ62LG-PNEA]
Replaced by: 16341-61030 4.15

90916-03052 THERMOSTAT
[Toyota | Land Cruiser | 1990 | USA | FJ62LG-PNEA] 35.07

Mine has been running right at 1/2 on the temp gauge, so I've been happy with that.

Don't drain the system Marc since you'll only lose maybe 1/2 gal before it stops...Just have a decent sized catch tray underneath since the coolant will spread out a bit while running off the motor.

Yes drain off about a gallon or more, unless you want to make a mess, before taking anything loose.

My bad ,Spike. I left out a digit. Part # for 180 * corrected on original post.

It has always been said that I work well under close supervision. Just another confirmation, I guess.

Ok, new thermostat installed, No leaks, used burping funnel to fill system and running hot. Do I still have air in the system somewhere? Was ice cold before, no heat and rubber basket bad on top.

Jacked up front, filled funnel, ran motor, but temp started to climb (first time gauge moved since owned) toward H after thermostat opened, quickly. Got nervous, tried. A couple more times, no luck. Burped top hose, any ideas?

No pressure at cap when I open hot. I expected there to be some?

Thank you!

@Jay- Can you run the rear heater hot, but front heater lukewarm?
Can also indicate partial clog in heater core, along with the t-stat gasket misaligned...

Had bad aftermarket sensor (new). Installed OEM and all good after the thermostat install.
