So I am building up my trail repair kit and need a Front CV axle assembly. I know that the FJC's is the same as the 4th generation 4Runner. However, I haven't been able to locate an aftermarket vendor. Toyota OEM is about $310 and I'd like to save some $$ where I can. Any one found an alternative yet?

Heather - you are right. I have been told I should be able to find rebuilt/remanufactured CV's for under $150 with lifetime replacement but can't find one anywhere. After reading the "CV thread" on the "blue" forum, I've been building my trail kit also. But, this is the missing part that is breaking the bank...

It is breaking the bank! We have a little auto parts store in my town, great place. It's like walking into Mayberry when you go in there. Anyway, those guys can get anything and have for me in the past. This time, the called back with nada. He called every rebuild shop he knows and they don't even have a core to rebuild. This sucks.

I had the same problem with tie rod ends. Damn those things are thin!

Hi. I am new to this thing. Correct me if I am wrong, but don't you need two of these axles? One for the driver side and one for the passenger side?

did you try checking with cruiserdan?

Yeah, they are available from Toyota, but it's just expensive. I am looking for a less expensive option for a trail spare. I already have the left and right seals.

I went through this same dilemma about 8+ mos ago and could not find an aftermarket CV axle. I tried a few local junk yards and they wanted $200+ for a used (mileage unknown) 05+ 4Runner CV axle. I decided to buy a new setup from Toyota of Dallas.

Yeah, I think that's where I am headed. I hate to drop all that coin, but I sure think it will be worth it if I get stuck on trail.

If you are going to spend that much, why not get an upgraded CV (like from CV Unlimited) and use your stock as a spare?

They did not offer anything for our vehicles when I called them last year. Might be worth a phone call to them on Monday to see if they have a HD CV axle for the FJC now.

I don't think enough people have broken their CVs yet to warrant the aftermarket to step in.

I just got a new spare from Toyota (hopefully I won't need it soon), but with a front ARB locker and 35s I prefer to be prepared. Got spare iiner and outer tie rods as well.

The front diff uses a different seal for the left than the right, that is why it is required. The seal is just insuramce if you fubar yours during a swapout, but in theory it should not be damaged.

Also remember to get red loctite for the spindle bolts.

After reading about making a field swap of a CV axle I thought why not have a complete set up ready to go, snap ring, dust shields, boots, the whole thing assembled. It would seem that the aggravation and time spent messing with everything would be worth having it all ready to just swap out.

So what your telling me that this won't work due to specific left and right parts. I'm sorry but I've read the 10 page shop manual section on this three times and all the other specific "how to" articles and find nothing that would appear to be left/right. Am I being dense?

When you buy the whole CV axle assembly it comes with everything (including snapring). It works both left and right sides.

The seal we are talkign about is the seal on the diff where the CV slides in. This seal should not have to be repalced, but sometimes it can get damaged in a swap out process. That is why some folsk prefer to carry a spare seal. Unfortunately the left and right side seals are different. So just get one (or more) of each. They are small, light and not that expensive.
