hrmm doesn't seem to work for me. was it after a certain year? Was it a standard feature?

you guys aren't missing anything. i tried it a few times when we got the LX 3 years ago. The car turns off when you open a door and it will only run for something like 10 minutes before it turns off even if you don't open a door. IMHO, poorly implemented system that makes it useless.

If you have the remote start option on your rig, you will have this orange sticker on the underside of your hood:

The car turning off when you open the door, and if I recall correctly you must have the key fob, prevents someone other than the owner/driver from taking your running vehicle. Also limiting the warm up period to just 10 minutes will prevent forgetting that you remotely started it, and is plenty to get the cabin warm, assuming you have the climate control on auto.

IMHO especially in Denver, typing as it's snowing, very useful.

It's a little complicated than that. In certain states it's illegal to leave your car on without an occupant for more than 10 mins. It's the rules that Toyota had to follow. As for the car shutting off if the door opens is to prevent the car from being stolen. If you step on the brakes it'll shut off as well I believe.

You guys complain that these things bother you but you have to understand that Toyota has to account for the percentage of people that will sue for causing brain damage because the car was running inside a closed garage or their kid shifted the gears while it was warming up or whatever else.

There is half the population that is smart enough to not do this, but they are just accounting for the other half of the population.

Always good to have more insight, complicated or not.

Here in Denver we have the "puffer" law (nothing to do with making a certain substance legal), prohibiting running vehicles without an occupant. On the table was an exemption for vehicles with remote start or some sort of theft deterrent if someone other than the driver with the key fob tries to drive it. On the news this week a police officer was quoted as it's ok now, if you meet those requirements. Yee Ha!

We have a 2016 LC w/ Remote Start in the Denver area as well, though the LC remains in the garage most the time and we don't like to leave it running when in the garage for obvious reasons. Remote start works but I find I need to be within about 30 yds. Much closer than I would prefer because to get that close I might as well walk to it and then just leave. I can see it being very handy for those who need to park it in the driveway or even at the curb.

Though I don't think I would stand on the front porch in my boxers trying to remote start the car. I can easily envision a Fred Flinstone's moment. :(

Yeah here in Grand Junction the same rule was implemented, if the car is locked it's okay. I will say that the Landcruiser remote start is a less then stellar implementation though. We just got out of our F350 and that auto start was awesome, it would lock the truck, start up, and run for 10, but you could unlock, put the key in the ignition, and drive away without killing the engine. I suppose the non-real key is the issue with the Cruiser not being able to duplicate that. All that having been said that auto start is about the only detail that the Ford had going for it over the Cruiser.

The system will allow two 10-minute cycles. After that, a door other than the rear hatch must be opened, at which point you can start it again:

NOTE: Vehicle started with the Remote Engine Starter can idle for a total of 20 minutes, however automatic engine shutdown occurs after 10 minutes of run-time. You can always restart the Vehicle after this initial shutdown. Once the total run-time exceed 20 minutes a vehicle door (excluding the trunk) must be opened in order to restart the Remote Engine Starter

I wish I had known that prior to purchase. One of the main reasons for seeking out one with remote start is because we carry 200 pounds of Labrador in the cargo area, and wanted the remote start to keep the HVAC system running while the vehicle is unattended. Now I have to go with an aftermarket system that either has no timer or one configurable by the user.

I reviewed the PDF you linked. The most helpful information is on the last page:

Never pull the plastic bag over your head. Otherwise, a serious injury or death from suffocation may occur.

Not sure what a plastic bag has to do with a remote start, but good advice nonetheless. :)

For the very few of you who "camp" in your truck and have the remote start, if you didn't know, you can use it from within the truck. Probably not its intended use case. But when waking this morning after sleeping in the truck over a chilly, raining night on the Oregon coast I used the remote function to start and warm up the truck while still in my sleeping bag. No need to climb into the front seat and press the brake pedal.

(At the same time I wonder about the safety implications. Don't let your kids play with your keys while in the truck!)

I swear I thought I saw a workaround for this somewhere online once before but cannot find it for the life of me now. Something that involved turning off the automatic engine shut down upon unlock without having to buy anything.
