I will be buying tires in the next few months and considering to re gear with the plans of installing a 5 speed (hopefully) before the end of the year,i know that 4.11 are very common with a 33' tires and 5 speed i'm planning on going with 285/75 r16 which would be close to 33's.my question is what would be your rpm with 4.56 gears and 5 speed?would it really make that much difference in the final ratio?give me your suggestion and experience with this set up,i will be doing most of the work including the gear change to save money.thanks in advance guys.:)

John:hhmm:

I just realize i posted in the wrong forum was meant for the 60's
mods could you kindly move it to the 60 section.

If you are talking about adding a 5 speed to a fj60 then the following applies. If you are talking about a pickup or 4-runner then disregaurd.

Do a search on the Internet for gear calculators and you will find more exact info but here are a couple simple links.
Differential Gear Ratio Chart - Tire Size to Gear Ratio
Suspension Tech: What Size Tires?, Tire Size Chart

Looks like the 4.10 is a closer match, basically in 4th at 65mph you would be 100rmp less than stock set up and with 4.56 you would be 200 rmp more.

Keep in mind that the 5 speed has a lower first and of course the overdrive. I think the overdrive in 15% so you can figure that into your rmp and see what gears you want to go with.

H55F 5 speed tranny1st....4.843:12nd....2.619:13rd....1.516:14th....1.000:15th....0.845:1Rev....4.843:1

Something else to keep in mind is you may be able to find a good set of used third members from a fj62 and swap them, less set up and may be cheaper?

You could keep the 3.7 gears and go with the 33's and have a rubber overdrive and get the 5 speed first. The lower first would help with the 3.7 gears although you may not need the 5th gear untill you re-gear to lower gears.

Also I think the 4.10 would be better with the 4 speed. Just Incas it takes you a long time to get the 5 speed.

Of course factor in if it is a DD or not, a wheeler, and roads you drive on often, Hills or flat, do you tow with it?. These will all play a factor in your decision.

Wish I had a 5 speed:flipoff2:.

^For the 4Runner, run 4.56's, trust me, it helps w/ the power band immensely!
***Test runs on a closed course last month, with the 33's on, 3500rpm @ 79-81mph, flat groomed doubletrack loose over hardpack.***
With 31's it's about the same RPM's but at 75mph and I got 3250rpm at 60-65 freeway speeds coming from your place back to mine that same week on 680.
Speeds verified by swapping the 31t speedo output for a 33 at the time.

Off-Topic..*Oh, and I got 247miles on 14 gallons last week with the 31's! :flipoff2:

That is only 17.5 mpg, -I run 4.88 gears and 33's on my 22re 92 pickup and it puts me back to stock power. I get 19 mpg around town in that set up.:flipoff2:

A pickup / 4-runner are totally different animals than the fj60. 4.56 on a fj60 would be good for 35's.

In my fj60 I just put longer shackles on it so I can run 33's with stock 3.7 gears to give me a bit of a rubber overdrive and lower rpm's on the highway. I will see how I like it this summer.

Last time we talked he's happy w/ his truck's gearing, I believe he's referring to the newly rebuilt 3VZE'd 4Runner build since he's looking at the manual hub swap for it too.

My lord, what have I started amongst my friends? The disease is spreading? John, shoot me a text. What's the stat's on that blue one? :D
Bring yourselves down Saturday and take Wimpy for a quick spin and decide for yourself.

Nice 4-runner. Are those your 31's or 33's? What kind of lift do you have on it?

DD's are 31's. Just sold my 33's to fund a pending project. Build thread needs to be reposted in here:

/Off-Topic (Sorry for that.)

Those look good for 31's. Those 4.56 gears should be right on with 31's. I hear it makes a bigger difference in helping out with the auto tranny. The auto's usually get lower gears from the factory to help with the loss of power due to the auto.

Looks good.
