Hi all,

I went to Brians 1989 4x4 web page and took a gander at my vin plate on my door jamb. It looks like I have 4.10 gears with 2 pinions. My question is if I regear to a 4.56 gears as I have a 5 speed transmission, am I replacing the gears in the rear end or in the 3rd member ie: transfer case?

I know it sounds silly, but I know more about guns than trucks. Also, is there a reputable shop in S Florida that can install them for peanuts. I would like to install 31 inch tires within the next 6 months.

Thanks,

Mark

It is in the rear end( the third member is part of the rear end)....... You dont do anything with the t-case........

Most people don't bother regearing for 31 inch tires.... Plus you live in Florida..... are there any hills that you have to drive?

The 3rd member is the differential, or more correctly it's the whole ring and pinion assembly that goes into the axle housing. You can't regear the t-case except for the low range, because the high range is the same speed as what's coming out of the tranny.

If you regear you have to do the front and rear diffs, because if you don't you won't be able to use 4wd without breaking something. Regearing at a good shop with good parts will probably cost more than your new 31 inch tires.....

I have 4.10s and I'm riding on 33s, and it's fine, a little slow starting out, but I don't mind because I can still get 18 mpg, if I regear I'll have more power, but it's not worth the money to me right now.

Im with you 2nd gen.......... I have 33's and still have the stock gears....... mY truck is slow but i dont rememebr it being fast with 31's................ Unless you really want to re-gear you dont have to....... I get about 16 mpg but it is my bad driving habits!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the help. No hills in SE Florida, but with 31's can I still drive in 5th gear on the hwy. I get about 18 city got 22 on the hwy and about 19 mixed driving with 235 75 R15.

Im probably looking at 31 x 9.5 x 15 as I would like to avoid lifting the truck if I can. I will probably add helper springs when I get the cash for the aux fuel tank.

I have been looking for a gas tank manufacturer that can build me a larger tank in the same spot where my current tank sits, or find someone that can make a 20 gallon tank to fit in the spare tire area. If not, Ill get the 13 gallon one, unless there is someone local in Ft Lauderdale that knows what they are doing to help install the tank.

I would hate to have a problem where I am cooking off 800 rounds of ammo if I drive to a 8 day rifle match in Lodi, WI.

I attend rifle matches where the roads are iffy at times especially when it rains.

Hey mark....... You can defenitly drive the truck on the highway in fifth gears with 31's I had 32x 11.50 on a stock pick up no rubbing and the mileage was actually in the high teens....... Ohh and on that fuel cell here is a link http://www.nwmp.com...... Good luck!

ya if anything with 31's if you really want to change the gearing just go find an auto tranny truck in the junk yard and throw out the 3rd members (4:30) as opposed to the standard tranny gears (4:10) thatll be more than you need with 31's if anything, but keep in mind ive driven for 3 years on my truck with the stock 4:10's and 33" tires.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. Are you suggesting that I go to the bone yard and pull the third member of an automatic truck with the stock 4.30 gears and install them in my truck. What about the front pumpkin?

Is this hard to do? What years would I be looking at?

Thanks,

Mark

My 2 cents: I regeared my '91 4cyl from 4.11 to 4.56 prior to switching to 31's, and I'm extremely pleased with the totally normal "drivability"...especially on the highway, going against the wind or long-grade climbing in 4th and 5th gears.

Hey all,

Thanks for everything. I found a place that sells 31 inch tires for 90.00. I believe mounted, balanced and installed. I will find out more information. No road hazzard insurance though ;-(

I will post something tomorrow night when I find out what kind of tires they are for that price.
