G'day guys, just thought id share my findings today for future reference in case there are other aussies here looking to replace their starter motors.
My local Toyota parts branch was very unhelpful to the point of being rude and rather disinterested in trying to help my work things out.
However i did find, and then confirmed (on here) their part number (Toyota's part number) for THE reduction gear starter motor to suit the FJ40 & FJ45's is:
28100 60070 (new unit - over $500)
28100 60070-84 (re manufactured - $380ish)
On their system this is listed as the starter for an FJ62 '87-92.
...............................
Bursons sell the JAS branded equipment.
They sell both 'new' and 're manufactured'.
New is part number SNJ225 - approx $287
Re manufactured is part number SRJ122 - approx $234.
..............................
Repco sell alternators and starter motors from Ashdown Ingram.
Their stuff is now 'OEX' brand.
This stuff is all re manufactured as far as i can tell.
Their part number is RXS413 - approx $194.
.............................
Repco was the only parts place who's documentation actually stated the RXS413 was suitable for F/2F/3F/3FE - something like '75-95? FJ40,45,60,70,75,80.
However if you call Ashdown Ingram, they will tell you the only starter for an FJ40-45 is their DXS400 - $266, and this part number is linked to the above Toyota part number on their system which doesnt make sense to me as that is a 60 series part number... Anyways the DXS400 is the std. replacement starter and is not a gear reduction type.
AND fwiw, their listed RRP on the RSX413 is more then Repco's RRP price.
............................
I ended up buying the Ashdown Ingram / 'OEX' RSX413 reduction gear starter from my local Repco store.
They were the only place to have a suitable one in stock, and it was on their discounted list so i got it for $160.
...........................
I removed my old starter - It's a really old Ashdown brand starter motor. It looks to be of a very high quality - much better then the stuff sold today.
FYI in the passed i had measured the peak current draw with this starter motor and it was averaging around 120A. (sometimes as low as 80A).
Sadly, its been getting worse and worse over the last couple years. It started out once in a blue moon, making that dreaded noise when trying to start the car. Then gradually got more frequent, and for the last month it was making the noise at least once a day.
As others have said on here its crazy how much smaller and lighter weight the reduction gear starters are. I was still somewhat a non believer that this little starter would be up to the job.
Fitting it was a simple job, and fortunately my starter positive battery cable was long enough to reach the new terminal position on the gear reduction starter. (Its further away, lower then the terminals on the standard starters).
.......................
Then i fired up the old girl with the new starter!
The sound is bloody strange to say the least, but it really turned over with authority and the engine started up straight away.
With the clamp meter i measured the peak current draw to be consistently 140-142Amps when starting. (More then my old starter... i had no idea what to expect, but i was expecting the draw to be less, maybe my old starter was really old and tired and not drawing as much as that type normally does?)
Anyways i hope this helps should anyone else here in Aus find themselves chasing a reduction gear type starter.
The Bosch, Auto Zone and Napa part numbers id found here on MUD had no meaning to the suppliers here.
Travis.
edited to add photo; old and new.
