Wow

What A great thread!
I heard my name getting thrown around so I thought I would check out the noise.

Looks like you did a great job sound deadening your cruiser. You did more than a lot of people do. I saw the pics you put up on the SecondSkin forum too. Same stuff, but I am sure the guys over there appreciate it. I know I do!

Have you had a chance to drive it yet?
Any noticable results?

Sully,

Unbelievable. That work has to give you the undisputed title of "World's Quietest 80 Series". I'm in awe.

How many hours/days/weeks did you put into this?

MJADDICTIONExcellent, thanks for the write up. Did you happen to price new carpet?
I looked briefly, but decided that mine was still in good enough shape. I just took it to the u-cleen-it car wash and pressure-washed it for about $20.

now passengers can hear each other fart - probably even little squeakers
I don't know about that. I haven't let my wife ride in it since it was done. :grinpimp:

Want to do that to mine?
No.

sugest you to go ahead and do something also with the doors, rear quarters and the back doors !!!!!!!!

By the way if the roof headliner is removed it could be also a great idea to insulate it !!!!!

The rear quarters have already been done. I've got the stuff for the doors, it's just too cold to work on this now, even in the garage. I will do the roof if ever the liner comes off. I think that would reduce some heat in the summer and maybe retain some in the winter.

How many hours/days/weeks did you put into this?
All told, it was down for 9 months. I probably spent about a month doing actual work. Now that I know how to do the dash disassembly, I could probably knock it out in about 2 weeks.

very well written write up, I am redoing an fj80 and was looking at different options as well as spay in sound deadners, I will check into their products for when I am buttoning up the interior of mine. good job, I look forward to a follow up when its all together and finished.... you by chance dont know what it added to the weight do you?

What I used was under 100 lbs. It shipped in two packages, both of which I'm fairly certain were under 50 lbs each.

Romer - FAQ?

Good work. Good reading. Very informative. Though FAQ might not be the right place if any place at all. Only because it would seem not to be a Frequently Asked Question... or is it? :) It's all relative.

The only part of this thats FAQ is "how much dynamat/sound dampener/etc does it take to do a LC?"
Answers: Floor/body cavities=40ft2
Firewall=44ft2
Doors=still not sure

Speechless!!!!

How far away from Maine are you? :D Great write up and pics. I was going to Durabak my floor, I think i have changed my mind. WOW!
Cheers

SSHHHHHH!!! Hear that? (birds chirping, crickets, pins dropping)

Nice work. I just pulled my interior after I initiated my inverter install. I wanted to power wash the carpet after 12 years of sodas and coffee spilling. It turned into a major operation but not that major.

I used a 5/16 sheet of foam rebond with oder eater and on top of that in the front area a 1/2 sheet of foam rebond with a moisture barrier. Prolly about 10 pounds of material. I did research locally available carpet padding to determine which had the best sound insulating properties as well as the best R-values. Turned out that the foam rebond was the best and cheapest (aside forn the sheet with the moisture barrier-it was the priciest).

Well done. Very professional.

Have you thought about stuffing the pillars and cross channels?

No. Maybe the B and C pillars, but I've already had sunroof leakage issues and don't want to chance messing that up again on the A pillars. If you're referring to the cross-channels under the front seat, I planned to keep them clear for routing wiring for future projects.

I am misty eyed.....
You have gone above and beyond in the name of cruiserdom and we knight ye'Sir Mat http://images.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/princess.gif

Anywo a coupla thoughs:
* Couldn't wind noise from windows be cut down with those hillbilly lookin plastic self adhereing wind deflectors they sell ??I ll take mine "smokey and the bandit gray" please:)
*Now that I got a hefty sub(basslink) I'm eyeing electronics to mic the cabin and send it to the sub out of phase which should cancel out a lot of sound, especially the real bassy lows that are IMHO the most fatiguing and f*** the most with the stereo's sound(ever notice the"improvement"of the system when parked, engine off?) I actually saw on the geek channel where the brits sucessfully did this with dramatic result.
Imagine :you hit a switch and the car goes silent.....gawd I'm squirming! LOL
Speaking as a recording engineer and instrutor me thinks the mats will do little to stop the super lows that resonate with the whole body assembly but I m s8re help a lot none the less.
That said I got a chub from your project and picture myself undertaking the same thing inspiered by your pioneering spirit in the ever ending persuit of frekin quiet rideness.I actually had just posted a thread asking about this very topic although I was thinking the rear quarters because wet pavement noise seems to come from there and possibly rear doors? Your post is like X mas morning at the orphange dude!!thanks againhttp://images.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Cheers mate

Wow, I've never been knighted before! I suppose Sir Mat is better than Sir Spends Way Too Much Time With His Truck At Ehe Expense Of "Quality" Time That Could Be Better Spent With The Kids And Pacifying The Wife.
I've noticed improvements in the neighborhood kids' cars when they're parked with the engine AND stereos off.
When you talk about ultra-low bass, what frequencies/woofer sizes are you envisioning? Personally, I'm not planning to go larger than a 12 and I'm not really looking to drop the bass hammer. That said, I'm intrigued about the bass-cancelling. Do you have any links to said technique?
I think I'll wait to do the doors before I attempt to hillrod-ize my truck with the deflectors.
I look forward to seeing what an audio professional does when you undertake this project.

I plan on doing the B and C pillars. Its too easy not to.

I used spray foam on the cross channel but would of used polyfill or something similar if I had it to do over. The spray foam is messy and hard to remove if needed. I will use some kind of loose fill in the pillars. After my new stereo install, in progress, I will be done with any wiring projects that could of (I didn't) used that channel.

I may look to do some fill in the rear quaters once my built in 12" sub-woofer/sub-amp install is soon complete.

I appreciate what you've done. Do you plan on designing a flat bed for camping now that you will have better control over your interior climate?

LOL Funny:)
I dug this up for both of us Happy reading

It s like turning your car into a giant set of bose noise cancelling headphones
The lows are from engine rumble and the thumping aspect of road noise mostly

Sully, I'm planning on doing this whole job this summer after I get of work and have a few extra $K to play with... I was just curious if this has grown on you over time and what else you would change?

I'm going to be doing alot of the same, except probably spectrum over all damplifier surfaces, and doors with damplifier pro/spectrum/luxury liner. I'm also going to do the roof of the car/headliner, and try to put rattle pad on as much trim as I possibly can.

And can the whole thing, from dash teardown to complete reassembly be done in 10 days or so?
