That looks nice! Glad the hinges worked out. I've been using the same design for 10 years without problems. I've had similar experiences with the 1" trailer spindles, and the larger custom lathe jobs are way too pricey. The $32 beast of a spindle works great, I've even seen that some other vendors are doing it our way now too! (IMHO there is no better compliment to a well designed product than to see someone else pick up on it and do the same!)

For the record we also have the spindle available in stainless steel, and the collars in zinc. Corrosion has never been a problem with the mild steel version, so you really don't need to spend the extra coin....but for those who like suspenders and a belt the option is there.

Also check out our new tire mount www.ironpigoffroad.com/home.htm. I'll try to insert a pic here, sorry about the campy website content - I had to steal it from our website because I'm not at the office.

BTW, did you ask for "Big Bird" yellow or was the painter just a fan of Sesame Street? JK ;-)

Thanks, The color has really grown on me.

Yeah, I dig it too. Never seen anyone try to pull off a canary yellow before, and I think this turned out really good. Much better than the "ferrari" yellows that just don't go with cruisers well. This color is more subtle, good choice for a non-oem color. Kind of like the OEM baby blue... only yellow...

cool, how much does that thing weigh?

19.5 lbs

(unless you're talking about Big Bird, in which case I would estimate 6,000 loaded for trail, you'll have to ask SIXTY for the real deal)

I ended up not cutting the spindle at all to reduce the lateral forces on the top bushing. The length you sent was just right. Great product for the price & I prefer the motion of a bushing due to the built in resistance rather than an ultra smooth spindle & bearing that tends to feel floppy.

Thats cool you decided to add the SS shaft but I don't really think it would be neccessary. But its not much more expensive so it may be worth it to some. Good job keeping the costs down.

Actually I was a big fan of Sesame St. but I would have painted it green after Oscar the grouch :flipoff2:

When we first picked the color it looked more like a Kamatsu yellow green

Last time it was on the scale it was about 5500. (I almost stopped by the scale this afternoon but I was in a hurry).

If you mean the bumper I'm guessing w/o the tire & jerry's about 150lbs.

Lance:
It's not the first time its been called the "Big Bird" but its probably going to stick... I like that :D

sixty the rear bumper looks sweet. I was curious as to how hard it really was and what Iron Pig provided. Im 16 and got a welder for christmas so i might be able to figure it out...how much more work is it after you get the tire carrier attatchment from IPOR...appreciate it

Looks good. Did you use 1.5" for the rocker protection and tire/can carrier? If so, did you bend them yourself? I noticed the cross member for your trac bar has some nice bends too.

Thanks for the info on the spindle. I still need to add a tire carrier to my bumper.

It is not that difficult to figure out, but it is alot of labor. I probably have 20+ hours into the entire thing & I do quite a bit of fab work. You need somethig to cut the steel with and a 14" cutoff saw or badsaws work great. If you have a metals class in your school it would be a great place to get guidance on metal working. there are only a few critical welds and depeding on your welder & skills it should be pretty straight forward (PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE). Take a look at the pirate4x4 link above and it shows my basic design.

IPOR also sells a really nice looking bumper that you could add the swinging part to & it is reasonbly priced.

Thanks John,

The front rockers are 1.5" & the rear rockers, anti wrap bar & can carrier are all 1.25". I bent them all using the harbor frieght pipe bender. There is a thread on here showing more detailed info on the rockers & bending. Your more than welcome to borrow the bender if you like. Its more quirky than a drawn hossfeld type bender & the layout can be more of a pain but if you are patient & have some extra pipe for mistakes its get the job done.

Those spindles are a great product for the price.
