I was tapping on the rear side windows and noticed that they were loose and rattling. I opened them and saw that the bracket that connects the motor to the window was bent on top and bottom. It was the arms on the bracket, they were bent outwards from their intended connecting point. It must happen over time unless someone has removed them and bent the arms at some point. I first took it out to repair, and then realized that I could fix it while it was still in. I re-installed it, then took some large channel locks and carefully bent the arms back into place. You have to be very aware of how you are bending them or you can brake the plastic parts they connect to. The windows are tight now and don't rattle. Not sure if anyone else has addressed this issue but I was excited to share it. I didn't even know the windows were making noise until now.

Mine rattle some when open so I'll look into this. Thanks for the post.

I think it might be caused when the window is open and its bouncing when the car hits bumps (up and down motion). That would explain the top and bottom arms of the bracket being bent.

I got one side that doesn't close as tight as the other and rattles some when open. The roll pin at the hinge point looks like someone unskillfully replaced it for some reason. Probably had it apart to replace the glass or something and didn't bother using a new roll pin.

It doesn't leak water, so it's on my long range to-do list.

In your case, I would probably replace the whole hinge assembly. The interior panel isn't difficult to remove. However, I'm not sure how the glass side of the hing attaches. I'm sure someone out there knows.

Good luck!

No, I fixed it, the arms were just bent, easy fix. Its tight when open and closed now. Glass side of hinge is screwed on through a hole in the glass.

I have to try this! My drivers side rear glass rattles like crazy when it's open.

Same here. I noticed mine rattling shortly after putting in a vent visor. Which i realized made it tough for the window to fully reach the top so I quickly pulled.

Thanks for sharing

I and others have found the mounting bolts for the actuator (at the back) to be loose. Removing the plastic interior trim is necessary but this fixed 90% of my rear window rattle.

This little wrench works great. It is make by titan.

What's the best way to start removing that interior panel?

IIRC you have to remove the lower interior panel before the upper. Start by removing the trim at tailgate/carpet interface. Then the shoulder belt hangers. Once everything obvious is loose you start pulling clips around the perimeter. Fast after you've done it once or twice, takes forever if you have drawers installed....
Depending on your specific issue you may be able to remove the sholder belt hangers, handles, etc and be able to pull the upper away enough to gain sufficient access.

I just opened my window and could see the bent arms, then I used channel locks to carefully bend the arms back into place. It was very obvious that the arms were bent, nothing else on mine was loose. I didn't have to remove any interior panels and my windows are totally tight now. Maybe I have a unique issue, don't know, but Sounds different than what Andy is saying so maybe. Just open the window and look at the arms as a first option, easy enough just to check. I would like to know if others have the bent arms to, out of curiosity. Either way, possibly my input could help.

Ahhh, so the windows have to be open to get to it. Gotcha. I was looking at it the other day and was also thinking I had to remove the entire panel.

Are you guys talking about the motorized side of the rear pop-out windows?

Looking at mine (which DO rattle) it looks like the entire mechanism is just worn and sloppy... I see all the rollpins you guys seem to be talking about but the problem on mine seems to be just general wear and sloppiness of those complete assemblies.

Does anyone have a Toyota part number for those swingout arms? If the costs aren't excessive, I'd probably just swap them out completely.... I'm going to be pulling my side panels anyway to install Dynamat so most of the work is already going to happen. :)
