Rear Muffler Removal

I have an exhaust bender and tubing at my house that I kept when I sold my repair shop...

I am going to be looking into maybe making an actually exhaust system for these from maybe the cat-back... but have to get under and take a look first then start researching...

I have come from the Subaru crowd and hated the obnoxious exhaust so built a lot of custom cat-backs with magnaflow mufflers which gave the nice rumble but not annoying... trying to avoid loud on mine as I have come to like the quiet drive... haha

I took a sawzall to the tailpipe. I've had no problems with it on there. I figure eventually it'll fall off and I'll install Skidoo's old one I have in the attic.

It is just a resonater as far as I know...so not a muffler...just helps with noise a little. Mine is coming off when I go to a magnaflow muffler and will re-bend tail pipe to go up into wheel well and then down for better exhaust trail clearance before exit. Should not affect emissions at all.

As everyone else has pointed out, it is only a resonator; not a muffler. In any case, I had mine cut off and replaced with an aftermarket tip when I installed a Flowmaster muffler. The stock muffler blew a hole from years of rust and I kind of liked how it sounded at that point, so I decided to go with an aftermarket Flowmaster to mimic the sound instead of replacing it OEM. The new exhaust definitely sounds nice and throaty, the way a V8 should sound IMO. No discernible gains in performance, not that I expected any

Its funny...while so many people have told me "its a resonator not a muffler", here I am not really knowing the significance of that. I only learn systems when I work on them...don't have the time to learn otherwise. I've tinkered with intakes and got the idea an intake resonator was to silence the noise...to uh..."muffle" it. So...now i am confused. If the muffler muffles the noise of the exhaust, what the heck does the resonator do?? Lol!

Take it off it you want, but use a tail pipe extension out the side to exit the exhaust to be safe. The resonator just helps change the sound a little. It has no restriction at all. Just shine a light inside and you will see that it is a straight through design. If it is damaged get rid of it and move on.

my question is, does my receiver and hitch act as a load bearing rear bumper, it protects the tail pipe and i am wondering, minus the Tupperware, is this something i cant high-lift on and support the weight of the vehicle as i drag it over a rock. Basically can this be my bior rear bumper until i get it?

I wasted $3 in gas getting this video so you know what it sounds like inside...

WOT
it's not much louder, I seem to have the loudest stock exhaust on a 100 known to man.

Are you sure you got her up to 90mph?? I'm assuming you reached 90 towards the end of the highway onramp but yet you were barely keeping up with the pickup truck on your left. Unless the pickup was doing 100+mph?

I-20, speed limit is 70mph, it goes from SC to Alabama in a straight line, it's a smooth, nicely paved highway with almost 0% of tickets, people will make you look dead stopped cruising at 90. That pickup was going about 95, I was going to show him my big V8 power, but my right foot had a spasm and decided to take it easy on him  . Stock the LC will do 0-62 in around 8 seconds, I started at 25mph and went all out (sounds crazier than it was) for 13 seconds. I'm not doing math today. I'm going to sleep.

I usually cruise 85-100mph, people still pass me...

FYI- iphone is terrible for capturing speed

Wow! I only wish traffic moved as fast in MA as it does in GA, but the state troopers will have a field day with us if we do! I've accumulated my share of speeding tickets and have come to the conclusion that 80mph is about the fastest one can drive around here without automatically getting pulled over and ticketed. Of course it depends on the driving conditions and trooper, but anything above 80 is open invitation for trouble :bang:

I can cruise at 85-90mph with absolutely no vibration. Smooth as silk. Gas mileage sucks, if I keep a nice 60mph cruise I can see around 17.5mpg. At 90mph for 50 miles I average 14mph.

that was iPhone video? I still have the 3G...waiting for the 5.
Your windows were up/closed ?

I'll see if i can get the 3G recorder (i recorded the exhaust in that post of mine) mounted for video and sound....hmmm...a challenge.
i like challenges.
and yes i'll post the man trans pics - its on a CD i cant find so i'll just take some new pics and post em up

i have to be careful accelerating and braking now....rear shocks have gone too.
cheers

iPhone 4, jammed in-between dash and windshield. Windows were up, I think A/C was on.

That video reminds me of how heavy my foot was after switching from a 4runner(v6) to a hundy(v8), for the first two weeks I was getting only 155-170 miles per tank haha

when gas wasn't through the roof in price I was pretty spirited in my driving, every stop light, on ramp, stop sign I would have a little fun. Not full beans all the time but I was having fun with the V8. Now days, I rarely floor it, rarely drive fast and really try to use the skinny pedal the least. When I take off from a light now, I am the SLOWEST one, once I get cruising I keep it at a nice speed and see what the ScanGauge says. The video was probably the first time this winter I had really gotten on it hard and wound out the gears like that.

I drive in the 2nd slowest lane, 65mph...everyone passes me lol

today driving back home from Boone NC to Charleston SC I averaged 16.3 mpg according to my calibrated UltraGauage...on way up I got 15.9 mpg but figure somewhere in middle is good as I had the mountains UPHILL going and DOWNHILL coming from Boone to Blowing Rock. Kept her around 2000-2200 RPMs...I camp out in right lane and let everyone pass...put her on cruise and crank the tunes.
