Made some progress on the rear bumper. My theory on this bumper is two-fold: meet the bumper height requirement in PA and since the overhang on a 55 is significant to say the least, I decided to "embrace" the overhang with steel. Strong steel at that... Thanks to a buddy for welding in the Rockstomper DIY shackle tabs (welded front and back) after I used a torch to make the slots. Thanks to Lance at IPOR for his DIY tire carrier and spindle assembly, worked out great. Now I just need a 35" spare;)

Hey dood, could you snap some pictures of how your trimmed your quarter pannels? It looks like you cut and turned them.

Mine are freaking chewed up and I've already checked out your bumper as a model for what I am going to do. Also, could you get some pics of how you attached it to the frame?

Did you think about chopping the frame out back in efforts to keep the bumper as close in as possible? The piggy as a big butt.

I posted more pics of the cuts and cap on the quarters. I ended up using pretty thick steel to cap them but I had good steel on both the inner and outer quarter left. I am not sure of the measurement on the cut but it was a lot. I would just cut what is necessary and go from there.
The bumper is a 2 X 6 X 1/4 wall tube and the sliders are 2.5 X 2.5 X 1/4 If I could do it over I would use a 2 X 5 or 4 to help the dismal departure angle. I had to meet 29" bumper height for PA so....
I thought about cutting out the rear frame section and boxing it with a new cross member and making that the frame/bumper but my frame is in great shape so I hesitated to chop it. This bumper is more of a boat anchor than I would like but it serves the purpose. I come down hard on it and nothing but gouges in the tubes.
The 2 X 6 is mounted to the frame center, which is another reason to keep it. There are the 4 mounting holes there and then the 4 for the pintle/drop hitch go through the frame. There are two 2.5 X 2.5 stems that go into the frame rails and bolt (all grade 8) down through the tube and top/bottom of the frame channel. All in all (and exlcuding the 8 bolts mounting the quarter sliders to the frame on the sides) there are 10 bolts mounting the bumper. All bolt holes were sleeved. It seems stout. Check the album for more pics but here are a couple. I also relocated the plate and added a light today. Almost done, need to add gusset and hole for the pin to hold the swing arm in the out position. Plate the back of the frame and reinforce the frame with a crossmember so it won't pucker under a load, and that should be it.
Again, this is a boat anchor but my goal for this rig is expedition/light rock/technical/cool to see on the hard trails piggie:flipoff2:

From the side it does not look too bad.

Nice. I'm gettin ready to make my back bumper/tire carrier. I was wondering if you could tell me how much further forward it is possible to mount the spindle before it would contact the reflector. Basically I need the measurement from the space between where you mounted your spindle and the reflector.

I need to make up a bumper/tire carrier for my '55 and I'd like to see what yours looks like but the links don't work any more.

Looks good! The rear quarters are not cut, right? Are the front of the rear quarter protection welded to the frame or just bolted on?

No cutting on the sheet metal and all the sliders are welded onto the frame with extra secure triangle metal sections.

Hey, I was just gonna ask about the pics. Great I'm starting to get ahead of myself looking at bumper ideas before I get the ole pig up and running. oops.

lol

Cruise4070 do you have any pics of the under side of your rear quarter panels? I have been looking at the option of trimming them up like you did and welding some luvered plates back underneith to seal them back up. Would like to see what you did though.

The rust is my main concern as of right now. I do however plan on keeping what I cut off with the possibility of figuring out how to fix in the future but I like the idea of what you have going on also. I saw a pretty interesting bumper mod on an 80 over on Pirate that I like and might mimic a bit to fit the ole'pig. Thanks will be watching for the pics.
